Dining in High Style

Consider the plight of today’s American dining room: often decorated in an overly formal fashion only to be underused and overlooked in favor of a breakfast nook or kitchen-island counter. In the hands of Los Angeles–based Ohara Davies-Gaetano, however, this Newport Beach dining room soars to the heights of style and function. “A key initiative was creating an inviting dining area that also serves as a pass-through space to access the bayfront terrace,” the founder of ODG explains. The skylighted floor-to-ceiling millwork offered an opportunity to create intimacy and utility within the grand scale of the room, notes Davies-Gaetano, who hung a Michael Anastassiades chandelier over a custom counter-height table with minimalist geometric pedestals, surrounded by gently rounded Thomas Hayes stools. “The height allows us to use the table for additional display of items, such as the stone sculpture, a vintage French piece that is seductive and poetic.” The sleek custom cabinetry provides additional storage for the adjacent kitchen, and the shelves showcase a global range of decorative accents. “The magic of this space is the dialogue between all the vintage, found and antique objects,” Davies-Gaetano says. “They bring the space to life, creating a sense of wonder and delight.”
