Summer Thornton Design, Inc
Mexican Modern That’s Pretty in Pink

Known for her dazzling mix of classic and modern furnishings in rooms that transport visitors into a world of color, pattern and print, Summer Thornton found inspiration in the mid-century architecture of Luis Barragán for her family’s vacation home in the arty Mexican surf colony of Sayulita. The Chicago-based designer incorporated two built-in L-shaped concrete sofas and sourced furniture from local designers and 1stDibs sellers who marry modernist silhouettes with natural materials and traditional techniques. For additional indoor seating, she chose a parota-wood and woven-palm-leaf daybed by txt.ure, a pair of Louis stools by CasaMidy and Colima low chairs from Comité de Proyectos, all purchased through 1stDibs. The designer commissioned the artist Daniel Valero to create intricately worked wooden coffee tables and added side tables by 1stDibs seller Peca. Of her Mexican sunset palette, Thornton says, “People often think of pink as an accent color, but I see it as neutral. This room shows that pink can be quite easy on the eyes.”
