Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso - Le Picador (II)

1961

About the Item

In 1961, Picasso created this lithograph on the theme of the corrida. The landscape, the crowd and figure of the picador, the variety of colors, the quick traits and the details make this work unique, telling us Picasso’s unique personality and his perception of the world around him. Picasso was just 8 years old when he created his first oil painting in his father’ studio, Don José Ruiz y Blasco, illustrating a young picador dressed in yellow. It was entitled “The Little Yellow Picador” (1889). Don José was a fanatic of bullfighting and regularly took Pablo to see the bullfights on Sunday. For young Pablo, it was an important event that marked Sundays to the extent that he considered sad those Sundays when his father didn’t take him to the bullfight. “Sunday afternoon with no bullfights, with nothing!”. Picasso’s obsession with bulls developed at that time. Bullfighting is a recurring theme in Picasso’s work through which the artist invites us to see art in a different and revolutionary way. He takes us to the plaza, just as he was taken by his father on these Sundays’ afternoon of his childhood. In this wonderful lithograph Picasso uses all 24 colors of a crayon box as a provocation and challenge for Mourlot, the printmaker who asked him for some color on an artwork initially conceived just in black. This is one of the 4 original transfer lithographs on wove paper accompanying the book By Jaimie Sabartés, “Toreros“. Dated twice on the plate. Will be sold unframed.
