Portrait of Race Horse "Hillaire" In A Stable, 19th Century JOHN FREDERICK HERRING (1795-1865) sales to $1,350,000 Large 19th Century Portrait of racehorse "Hillaire" in its stable, oil on canvas by John Frederick Herring Senior. Excellent quality and condition example of the famous equestrian painters work. Signed and titled. Presented in an antique gilt frame. Measurements: 42" x 34" framed approx Artist Biography John Frederick Herring was originally a carriage painter and then a coachman. He dedicated all his free time to art and took some lessons from Abraham Cooper. For many years he painted nothing but racehorses, but towards the end of his career he extended his repertoire to other subjects. His work became very popular and he worked for Queen Victoria, the Duke of Orleans and George IV. His works are highly detailed and powerfully realistic. Few artists have better understood how to depict horses. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, the Suffolk Street Gallery and the British Institution from 1818 to 1865.
