Sheep in a Lane - 19th Century English Landscape Oil Painting of Storm
Located in Gerrards Cross, GB
‘Sheep in a Lane’ by John Linnell (1792-1882). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1863. It is listed in the definitive catalogue of Linnell’s known works compiled by the artist’s biographer Alfred Story in 1892. John Linnell exhibited at the Royal Academy from the age of 15 and despite success as a portraitist, it was as a painter of poetical landscapes that gained him greatest acclaim. Unfortunately, his enormous popularity also earned him considerable jealousy, not least from John Constable who was always keen to spread malicious and unfounded gossip about his rival. In addition, Linnell’s entirely reasonable sense of self-worth and unwillingness to fawn over wealthy patrons (and to ensure they paid promptly for the paintings they had commissioned) was seen as impudence by the gentry and delayed his election as a Royal Academician. By the time the Academy was shamed into finally recognising him, Linnell, by then Britain’s most popular painter, turned down the belated invitation to apply for membership with typical poise. As a landscape artist Linnell was considered second only to JMW Turner. Upon his death in 1882, The Times obituary lamented that 'a glory seems to have faded from the domain of British Art. England mourns John Linnell, the most powerful of landscape painters since Turner died'. Between 1807 and 1881 John Linnell exhibited 177 paintings at the Royal Academy, and 92 at the British Institution. During his long career John Linnell was a patron and financial supporter of both William Blake and...

Frederick Goodall Dessert Village Egypt Plein Air Orientalist Oil Painting 1859
Located in Meinisberg, CH
Frederick Goodall RA (English, 1822 - 1904) A Desert Village with mosque at Midday in Egypt, North Africa • Oil on paper laid on canvas ca. 17 x 38 cm • Original frame ca. 27 x 47 cm • Monogramed lower left A small village dominated by a domed Mosque with single minaret and terracotta coloured dwellings, along with oasis suggestive palm tree line to the horizon under a deep blue clear sky. In the sandy foreground is a lone bedouin (centre), a small group with camel heading into dunes (left) and a group of seated and discusive villagers (right). The oil appears to in fact be painted first on artist paper and then was laid on canvas, suggesting the probability of being painted in the field on artists sketch paper. Imagine the excitement of the Victorians seeing this scene plucked from life in a far away land - remember photography ist just being born. The painting is not dated, but research suggests a date of 1859, so painted during Goodalls first trip to Egypt from 1858/59. Frederick Goodall was born in London in 1822, the second son of steel line...

Out of Mischief - British Victorian 1891 art interior portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This absolutely charming exhibited British Victorian oil painting is by female artist Maria Louisa Angus. Painted in 1891, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. The composition is an interior scene with two young girls on a sofa, looking at a picture book and keeping 'out of mischief' as it is entitled. The room holds an exotic mix of oriental objects and a gorgeous umbrella plant in a gleaming terracotta pot. The girls themselves are sat on a beautifully detailed fur throw, looking at a book, with a marine painting on the wall behind them. The brushwork and colouring are superb and the pink of the older girl's dress is picked up throughout the room. A really lovely painting by a very talented Victorian female artist. Signed and dated M.L. Angus 1891 lower left. Provenance. Exhibited at the London, Royal Academy, 1891, no. 841 entitled Out of Mischief. Anonymous, sale, Doyle, New York, May 20, 1998, lot 161, illustrated. Private collection, Newport, Rhode Island. Condition. Oil on canvas, 27 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 34 inches by 27 inches framed and in good condition. Maria Louisa Angus (1863 - 1934) was born in Southwark on 29th July 1863, the daughter of a printer. She studied at the Lambeth School of Art in 1886 and established a studio at 1a Cowley Street in Westminster, later she worked out of Powers Studio in Ruskin House, Rochester Row. She specialised in genre subjects and some landscapes. She exhibited 10 pictures at the Royal Academy between 1888 and 1893 as well as many London Galleries and Societies. In 1913 she exhibited in the Anglo German Exhibition...

Genre historical oil painting of merchants at a table
Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Fritz Wagner German, (1896-1967) The Merchants Meeting Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 25 inches x 31 inches Size including frame: 34 inches x 40 inches A wonderful genre painting of a group of men in 17th century costume seated at a table by Fritz Wagner. Four of the men converse and drink wine whilst another stands behind lighting a clay pipe. A model ship can be seen suspended from a beam above the table and could well have been a prop owned by Wagner as it features in a number of similarly themed scenes painted by him. The ship was a symbol of the Hanseatic League, a commercial confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Central and Northern Europe that began in Germany during the 13th century. By the early 1700’s it had begun to break up. Fritz Wagner was a German painter of genre, landscapes and still life who was born in Munich in 1896. He was the son of the genre painter Josef Wagner-Höhenberg (1870-1939) who initially taught him art and greatly influenced his work. He later attended art school in Munich under Adolf Schinnerer (1876-1949). As well as working in his home City, Wagner also travelled throughout Europe to paint. Whilst in Italy he studied at the Acadamie de la Brera de Milan. During the late 1950’s and towards the end of his life he lived at 9 Enzianstrasse in the Grünwald area of Munich. He followed in the footsteps of artists such as Meissonier and Lesrel who painted genre subjects with a military or historical theme. Wagner developed his own style with his subjects set in a more informal and relaxed atmosphere, and deliberately chose period costumes which enhanced their decorative value. He also gave each figure a different character allowing the viewer to be drawn into the enfolding visual dialogue. Wagner also paid particular attention to his interiors, often including lots of clutter to give added interest and using windows...
