Coastal Landscape - British Victorian art marine oil painting France boats
Located in London, GB
This lovely British Victorian coastal oil painting is by noted artist Thomas Eyre Macklin. It was painted in 1882 and the location is France. The composition is fisherman in the foreground around upturned boats on grass. A couple of ladies are sat on the grass over looking the sea, one with a sun umbrella. Beyond is the sea or harbour with buildings, including one with a French flag, on the land across the water and the cliffs of the headland. The detail and brushwork are superb as are the vibrant greens of the grass and red roofs. This is a lovely 19th century figurative coastal landscape and an excellent example of Macklin's work.

Thomas Eyre Macklin RBA (1863-1943) was a British painter in oils and watercolour, illustrator, sculptor and designer of monuments, who signed his works T. Eyre Macklin or T.E. Macklin. After a promising career at various art schools, including the Royal Academy, in the late 19th century Macklin produced Romantic black-and-white illustrations for books, numerous landscapes, figurative paintings and civic portraits, all of which came to the attention of local newspapers in his native Newcastle upon Tyne. In the 20th century he concentrated on Art Deco monuments and other sculpture, his best-known works being the South African War Memorial in Newcastle, the Bangor Memorial, County Down, and the Land Wars Memorial at Auckland, New Zealand. According to Macklin, his ancestors were from County Donegal. He was the son of John Eyre Macklin, a soldier, journalist and landscape painter; both were Newcastle-born. Macklin married writer Alice Martha Alys Philpott and they had one child, but she later petitioned for divorce on the grounds of infidelity. He had bouts of illness during later life and died in Devon in 1943. Encouraged by his father, Macklin showed a remarkable aptitude for drawing from childhood, and devoted himself to art from the age of ten, being one of W. Cosens Way's students at the Newcastle School of Art, where he was one of the most successful pupils ... On one occasion he carried off the four head prizes of the year. Macklin was selling his pictures by the age of thirtee. In 1884 he moved from Newcastle to London to sketch antiques at the British Museum, and trained at Calderon's Art School until c.1887. After that, he studied at John Dawson Watson...

19th Century genre oil painting of a soldier collecting his daughter from school

Villa du Connetable, Ecouen
Oil on panel, signed
Image size: 21.75 inches x 17.5 inches
Size including frame: 28.5 inches x 24.25 inches
Provenance: Alexander Gallery, Bristol
A finely painted genre scene depicting a soldier collecting his daughter from school at the Villa Du Connétable in Ecouen. The soldier, wearing his order of the légion d'honneur, walks with his daughter past a boy with dogs as other parents and school children follow behind. The ‘Villa Du Connétable’ or The Constable’s Villa was the local name for the historic Château d'Écouen. Dargelas lived at Ecouen so would have known the building and area well. Originally a fortress inherited by Anne de Montmorency, the Grand Constable and Commander of the French Army, it was rebuilt by him as a much grander property in 1539. It remained in the Montmorency family until 1632 when it passed to the Bourbon-Conde family. Like many estates owned by the aristocracy, it was confiscated by the state during the French Revolution. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte gave it to the Legion d’Honneur and it became a school for the daughters of the chevaliers of the order. Although it was returned to the Conde family after the restoration of Louis XVII, it was re-established as a school for the Legion d’Honneur in 1850 by Napoleon II. In 1862, the château was declared a Monument historique. It remained as a school until 1962 and in 1969 become the home of the collection of Renaissance art of the Cluny Museum. It opened as the French National Museum of the Renaissance in 1977.
Andre-Henri Dargelas was a genre painter born in Bordeaux, France on 11 October, 1828 to Jean Baptiste Dargelas and Jeanne Virginie Mimandre. In 1854, he left his home to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he became a pupil of François Edouard Picot (1786-1868).
He lived at 49, Rue d’Hauteville, from where he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1857. He continued to exhibit at the Salon over the years, receiving a number of medals and honourable mentions. At some point during the early 1860’s, Dargelas moved to Sarcelles, a commune in Northern Paris. By this time, he had begun specialising in paintings of children in a naturalistic style at play. Many of his paintings featured school children, with some set outside against architectural backdrops, such as this fine example. His paintings proved highly popular with collectors in Paris as well as in London and New York.
On 10 February 1866, he married Catherine Etienne Gabrielle Duverger. His wife was the daughter of the artist Théophile Emmanuel Duverger...

A Bustling Harbour Town
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863
Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches
Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches
A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour.
Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850).
Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...

19th Century Scottish landscape oil painting of Highland sheep at Glen Coe
Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire

Morning, Head of Glen Coe
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1897, further inscribed verso
Image size: 12.5 inches x 18.5 inches
Size including frame: 19.75 inches x 25.75 inches
A superb Scottish landscape painting of Highland Sheep at the head of Glen Coe by William Watson. The sheep and their lambs are depicted grazing in the morning light with the dramatic mountains beyond. Glen Coe is a valley located in the Highlands to the North of the county of Argyll and close to the province of Lochaber. The area, which became infamous for the Massacre of Glencoe is one of Scotland’s most scenic Highland glens.
William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s.
As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists.
Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen Watson (1871-1947), William Robert Charles Watson (1873-1928) and Walter James Watson...

Portrait of Children at Play - British Victorian Genre art oil painting interior
By Joseph Clark
Located in London, GB
This lovely British Victorian genre oil painting is by noted artist Joseph Clark. Painted in 1881 it is a charming composition of three young children playing with a doll on the floor of a cottage by the hearth. Historically it has been entitled Children at Play but also known as Playing Doctors according to the literature. There is lovely colouring and detail. A very sweet British Victorian genre oil painting by a much collected artist.
Signed and dated 1881 lower right.
Provenance. Joseph Clark ; A Popular Victorian Artist and his Work by Eric Galvin. Plate 23. Children at Play (1881) Page 132f.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 29 inches by 22 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 36 inches by 29 inches and in good condition.
Joseph Clark (1834-1926) was born near Dorchester, Dorset. He studied painting in London under J. M. Leigh (1808-1860), who was himself the only pupil of William Etty, RA (1787-1849), the celebrated painter of classical and historical subjects. Clark specialised in depicting domestic genre subjects of a tender nature which generally featured children and he also painted a small number of biblical subjects. In 1857 at the age of twenty three he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy and he continued to exhibit there for all but two of the subsequent forty seven years. Many Victorian painters sought to demonstrate their social conscience through emphasising in their paintings the importance of family life and Joseph Clark was no exception. Whilst avoiding the overly sentimental style of some of his contemporaries, he frequently chose subjects which sought to remind people of their good fortune in having a caring family at a time when many children grew up as orphans in workhouses. Clark enjoyed considerable success with his paintings, maintaining both a London house and a home in the country for much of his life. In 1876 he was awarded a medal in Philadelphia for his paintings 'The Sick Child...

Archer was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in 1808. In 1820 he went to London, and became a pupil of John Scott, a noted engraver of animals. His apprenticeship was cut short when Scott became ill, and he returned to Newcastle. There, in collaboration with William Collard he etched a series of large plates of Fountains Abbey, after drawings by John Wilson Carmichael, and on his own produced several plates for Mackenzie's History of Durham. He then moved to Edinburgh, where he made a collection of drawings of the ancient buildings and streets of the city.
In about 1830 he returned to London, and entered the studio of the engravers William and Edward Finden, who were then working on illustrations for the annuals and such publications as their Bible Illustrations, and The Ports and Harbours of Great Britain. After a few years the market for this kind of illustration declined, and Archer had to find less renumerative work engraving plates for the New Sporting Magazine.
Having been elected a member of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours, he produced a series of drawings of St. Mary Overy, previous to its restoration, and of Lambeth Palace. Having accumulated more than one hundred drawings of London...

La Marquesa De Escombreras - French 19thC art female portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb French Victorian portrait oil painting is by noted French society painter Jules-Elie Delaunay. Painted in 1883 it is a three-quarter length profile portrait of the Marquesa de Escombreras. Her full name was Trinidad Maria Piedad Fulgenico de Aguirre. She was born in 1824 in Cartagena, Spain, the seventh and last child of Jose de Aguirre, a retired naval officer. On October 22nd 1843 she married Frenchman Hilarion Roux (1819-1898) who was a banker from Marseille who settled in Cartegena in January 1843. After her marriage she was known as Trinidad Roux. Hilarion Roux had arrived in Cartagena first to trade silver. He quickly became one of the main lead industrialists in Catagena then in the Mediterranean area. The couple later lived in France again, in Marseille and later in Paris, where Trinidad died in 1905 aged 81. Interestingly there is no similar portrait of her husband.
In this superb painting, the Marquesa, aged about 60 in reality, is wearing a black off the shoulder dress...
