A charming harvest scene by Arthur Walker Redgate featuring ducks near a harvester’s picnic. Several ducks are depicted making their way towards a picnic basket and blanket by a hedge. Meanwhile, two farm workers stack sheaves of wheat onto a cart on the slope of a hill. In the distance a red brick farm can be seen amongst some trees.
Arthur Walker Redgate was born in Nottingham in 1860 to Sylvanus Redgate (1827-1873), a photographer and portrait artist and Elizabeth Walker. His second name is sometimes mistakenly listed as William, however his birth record and other official documents confirm it was Walker, taken from his mother’s maiden name.
He was probably initially taught by his father, but as their style and subject matter differ he may well have received tuition from one of his father's artistic circle or attended art school, most likely the local Nottingham School of art. By the age of 20, he had established himself as a landscape artist and began exhibiting from around 1880. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1886 and continued exhibiting there throughout his life. He lived with his family in Nottingham until his marriage to Edith Elizabeth Henson in December, 1883. By 1885, the couple had moved to Leicestershire where their first child John Sylvanus Redgate was born, living at Mount Pleasant in Castle Donnington.
Redgate was a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists, later becoming vice president and exhibited at their Nottingham Castle Museum shows. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists as well at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery. He painted the surrounding views where he lived in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and the river Trent but also travelled around the country visiting Norfolk, Derbyshire and Wales.
Around 1893, shortly after the birth of his second child, the family moved back to the Nottingham where they lived at 11 Charnwood Grove, West Bridgford. Redgate remained there until his death on 6 October 1906. His obituary was published in the Nottingham Evening Post. Examples of his work can be found at the Castle Donnington Museum, Nottingham Castle Museum and Wollaton Hall.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1892, further inscribed verso
Image size: 12.5 inches x 18.5 inches
Size including frame: 18.5 inches x 24.5 inches
A wonderful painting of Highland sheep resting near Loch Awe by William Watson Jnr. Loch Awe is located in Argyll and Bute in the Scottish Highlands and this scene is taken from the mountain side overlooking the loch.
William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s.
As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists.
Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen...

He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874, he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Country Cottage
By Abraham Hulk the Younger
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky.
Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.
Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...
