The Amphitheatre of Loch Lomond from the Water Mill at Ross-Ben Lomond Scotland

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

The Amphitheatre of Loch Lomond from the Water Mill at Ross-Ben Lomond by John Wilson Ewbank, RSA (1799-1847) signed and inscribed with title verso oil on millboard, 24.5 x 35cms, plus frame provenance: private collection, Scottish borders Very fine and beautiful antique oil painting of this important view in Scotland, depicting the ever beautiful Loch Lomond. The painting is by the very well listed John Wilson Ewbank (1799-1847). John Wilson Ewbank (English, 4 May 1799–28 November 1847), was an English-born landscape and marine painter who was renowned for his naturalistic landscapes and seascapes of the Scottish borders and the North East coast of England. Ewbank was born at Darlington on 4 May 1799, the son of Michael Ewbank, an innkeeper. He was adopted as a child by a wealthy uncle who lived at Wycliffe, on the banks of the River Tees, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Intended for the Roman Catholic priesthood, he was sent to Ushaw College, from which he absconded. In 1813 Ewbank was apprenticed to Thomas Coulson, an ornamental painter in Newcastle. In around 1816 he moved with Coulson to Edinburgh, where he was also taught by Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840), a popular painter amongst the Scottish and English nobility. Ewbank found work both as a painter and a teacher. He was nominated in 1830 one of the foundation members of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1833 he is listed as living at 7 Union Street on the eastern fringe of the New Town in Edinburgh. Sadly after the death of his wife he descended into depression and was stripped of his status as an academician in 1838 and died in poverty of typhus in Sunderland in 1847. Ewbank’s calm seascapes were strongly influenced by 17th Century Dutch artists, particularly Willem and Adriaen Van de Velde. Although his best work dates from his early years, Ewbank became a popular and wealthy art teacher in the capital where made a reputation with cabinet pictures of banks of rivers, coast scenes, and marine subjects. Ewbank’s sketches from nature were especially admired, and a series of 51 drawings of Edinburgh by him were engraved by W. H. Lizars for James Browne's Picturesque Views of Edinburgh (1825). He was also noted as a painter of landscapes and seascapes as exemplified in this painting. The busy port of South Shields is located on the south side of the mouth of the River Tyne, Northumberland. The settlement was founded by the Romans in AD80 when Agricola built a fort on the Lawe Top. The Romans used it as a supply base for Hadrian’s Wall and by the 5th Century, South Shields was a major Roman military stronghold and commercial centre. By 1500, South Shields had become an important seaport, trading primarily in timber, lead, coal and salt. The first shipbuilding yard was established by Robert Wallis in about 1720, he was soon followed by others, including Thomas Marshall...

Fine Antique British Botannical Watercolour Painting, circa 1900's

By Caroline Worsley

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

A very fine original antique English botanical watercolour painting depicting this beautiful depiction of a flower/ plant. The work came to us from a private collection in Surrey, England and had been part of an album of works assembled by the artist during the early 1900's. During the Victorian and Edwardian era in Britain, it was very fashionable for ladies of aristocratic and wealthy backgrounds to draw and paint still lifes of flowers and plants that they had picked or seen in gardens. Many were highly accomplished and extremely talented artists, who sadly were not encouraged to exhibit due to society frowning upon such activities. Artist/ School: Caroline Worsley...

Out of Mischief - British Victorian 1891 art interior portrait oil painting

Located in Hagley, England

This absolutely charming exhibited British Victorian oil painting is by female artist Maria Louisa Angus. Painted in 1891, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year. The composition is an interior scene with two young girls on a sofa, looking at a picture book and keeping 'out of mischief' as it is entitled. The room holds an exotic mix of oriental objects and a gorgeous umbrella plant in a gleaming terracotta pot. The girls themselves are sat on a beautifully detailed fur throw, looking at a book, with a marine painting on the wall behind them. The brushwork and colouring are superb and the pink of the older girl's dress is picked up throughout the room. A really lovely painting by a very talented Victorian female artist. Signed and dated M.L. Angus 1891 lower left. Provenance. Exhibited at the London, Royal Academy, 1891, no. 841 entitled Out of Mischief. Anonymous, sale, Doyle, New York, May 20, 1998, lot 161, illustrated. Private collection, Newport, Rhode Island. Condition. Oil on canvas, 27 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 34 inches by 27 inches framed and in good condition. Maria Louisa Angus (1863 - 1934) was born in Southwark on 29th July 1863, the daughter of a printer. She studied at the Lambeth School of Art in 1886 and established a studio at 1a Cowley Street in Westminster, later she worked out of Powers Studio in Ruskin House, Rochester Row. She specialised in genre subjects and some landscapes. She exhibited 10 pictures at the Royal Academy between 1888 and 1893 as well as many London Galleries and Societies. In 1913 she exhibited in the Anglo German Exhibition...

Children Playing On The Beach by Les Parsons (British b. 1945) * see below signed oil on canvas, framed in swept gilt frame. framed: 27 x 23 inches canvas: 20 x 16 inches provenance: private collection, England condition: This painting is in excellent condition, with vivid colors and sharp details that show no signs of fading. This piece is ready to be displayed and enjoyed, offering a touch of nostalgia and natural beauty to any space. Les Parson has been a popular British Artist with a loyal following for nearly forty years. Despite having a personal interest in art, Parson never received any formal training. Born in Lancashire in 1945, he worked in London as a Computer Engineer until 1974. He then moved to Cornwall working as an installer of Radar, Sonar and Ship to Shore radio on small fishing boats. In a chance meeting with local gallery owners in 1978, Parson was encouraged to expand his artistic skills and transform his hobby into a career. He therefore put aside his pencil sketching and watercolour paintings in lieu of the more permanent medium of oil on canvas and become a flourishing full-time artist. As a professional artist, Les Parson has become renowned for his nostalgic paintings of rural landscapes featuring children at play. His work is internationally recognised, with many of his paintings published as prints. The paintings of Les Parson remain highly-sought after by both domestic and international collectors. A large impressive original Victorian oil painting which was painted circa 1890 by Scottish listed artist Joseph Farquharson RA. This Romantic Scottish landscape view is in fine condition and is framed in a Victorian gilt gallery frame. He was a noted landscape painter of snow scenes around Finzean in Aberdeenshire and often painted at dusk or dawn. This painting however depicts a sublime Scottish river landscape with a river and the mountains in the background. It is a very expansive panoramic view. A large painting in good condition and a lovely example of a 19th century Scottish landscape. Similar examples of his paintings are on display in Kelvingrove Art Gallery Glasgow and the National Gallery Scotland. Signed Joseph Farquharson. Provenance. Scottish collection. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size is 37 inches by 27 inches, fine condition. Framed size is 44 by 34 inches, housed in a gilt gallery frame. Excellent condition. His mother, a celebrated beauty, was an Ainslie. His early days were spent in his father's house in Northumberland Street below Queen Street Gardens and later at Eaton Terrace beyond the Dean Bridge, Edinburgh and at Finzean. His father Francis was a doctor and laird of Finzean in Aberdeenshire. Joseph was educated in Edinburgh and permitted by his father to paint only on Saturdays using his father’s paint box. When Joseph reached the age of 12, Francis Farquharson bought his son his first paints he could call his own and only a year later he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Scottish Academy. His first major portrait was of ' Miss Alice...
