King Charles Spaniel Diptych, 19th century oil on canvas

early to mid 19th century

About the Item

This early to mid 19th century diptych features a pair of King Charles Spaniels, one with a Blenheim coat (left) and one with a black coat. The unidentified artist chose a medium of oil on canvas for the canines, and presents the dogs in a realist manner. The two dogs are centered before a grassy, coastal plain, and maintain direct eye contact with their viewers. Though one of the dogs is presented in a standing position while the other is seen lying down, both show off moderately shaggy, curly coats. The original black frames have been inlaid into a more contemporary black and gilt frame. Each of the paintings in this pair measures 8.75 x 11 inches unframed or 12.25 x 14.25 inches framed. When placed side by side, the pair measure a total of 12.25 x 28.5 inches.
