1859-1941 Danish
Vingnas, Lillehammer
Signed, titled and dated "P Monsted / Vingnas, Lillehammer 1918” (lower right)
Oil on canvas
Celebrated as the greatest Danish landscape painter of his time, Peder Mork Mønsted is renowned for his depictions of the Danish countryside and coastline. His skill at capturing the features and mood of a place is on full display in this exceptional work entitled Vingnas, Lillehammer. The tranquil wintery scene combines the artist’s attention to detail with his almost impressionistic sensitivity to light, bringing this naturescape to life on canvas.
Born during the latter half of the Danish Golden Age, Mønsted's oeuvre represents a stunning mix of realism, romanticism and modernity. Mønsted's remarkable attention to detail in Vingnas, Lillehammer is a hallmark of Danish Golden Age painting, which in many respects harkened back to the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. Yet, the snowy, mountainous terrain and dramatic lighting off the snow reveal a more naturalistic and modern view of nature. Mønsted captures a sleepy and secluded village in Norway overlooking a snow-capped vista, rendered with his characteristic saturated palette and sharp attention to detail. As a whole, it is a remarkable example of Mønsted's singular style and represents a break from his typical Danish subject.
Mønsted was born in 1859 in the eastern Denmark town of Balle. He began his artistic studies at an early age at Prince Ferdinand's Drawing School in Aarhus, where he worked under the tutelage of the great landscape painter Andries Fritz. In 1875, he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Art. It was there he fell under the influence of artists such as Christen Kobke and Pieter Christian Skorgaard. Their devotion to color and the romanticism of the Danish landscape would prove remarkably influential on the young painter.
After completing his studies, Mønsted traveled extensively and often to Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Italy, North Africa and the Mediterranean. However, the Danish landscape and coastline would remain his favored subjects, and today they are considered to be his most captivating works. His compositions reflect a romantic and highly poetic view of nature, which he ingeniously translated into some of the grandest landscapes of his generation.

Peder Mørk Mønsted
Peder Mørk Mønsted (Danish, 1859-1941) was a leading Danish landscape painter of his time, known for his photo-realist style. He trained at the Copenhagen Academy from 1876-1879 and worked under the artists Peder Severin Kroyer and William Adolphe Bouguereau. Monsted traveled throughout his career, including to France, Switzerland, Italy, and North Africa. Although most well known for his landscapes, he did paint portraits and figural scenes as well. Monsted was the favorite painter of King George of Greece, and was invited to Athens in 1893 where he painted the city and the Greek countryside for a year. Monsted exhibited his works at the Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen, and his paintings are featured today all over the world, including the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York and the Chi Mei Museum in Tainan, Taiwan.
