Pair of Antique 17th Century Floral Still Life Paintings, attr. Vincenzino

Late 17th Century

About the Item

Pair of Antique 17th Century Floral Still Life Paintings, Attributed to Vincenzino Italian, second half 17th Century Dimensions: Frame height 111cm, width 170cm, depth 7cm; Canvas height 94cm, width 151.5cm This beautiful pair of Italian still life paintings are attributed to the important Milanese artist Giuseppe Vincenzino, who was active in Milan and Lombardy during the second half of the 17th Century. They both depict dramatic still life scenes of floral bouquets in dimly lit pastoral settings, with dark evening clouds visible in the background. One of the paintings depicts three floral studies: a tall bouquet of white, pink, blue and red flowers; a smaller gold dish of white flowers; and an upturned pale dish with red, pink and yellow flowers spilling out. The other painting depicts a large central display of rich red, yellow and pink flowers in an upturned basket, surrounded by other white floral bouquets in taller vessels. One painting is signed on the reverse 'Vincenze del Fiore', which is possibly a variation of Giuseppe Vincenzino's signature 'Vincenzino de' Fiore'. However, this signature may be a later inscription. The reverse of one of the paintings also features the number '2523' in red, while the other includes a Cyrillic stamp. They are both held in fine giltwood frames.

  • Summer Day Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Lilies, Oil on canvas)
    By Dan Rupe
    Located in Hudson, NY
Summer Day Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Lilies, Oil on canvas) by Dan Rupe 22 x 22 inches oil on canvas Signed on reverse Artist Dan Rupe paints only from life, his composition ruled by his intuitive sense of formal order. He begins covering his canvas with a deep crimson wash. This ground gives his brilliant pure color , applied with an expressive, direct gesture, an electric charge. No matter how often or how long one looks at a Rupe painting, it is always the present tense. The tone of his palette, the freshness and clarity of primary colors, reflects an optimistic attitude, an intrinsic love of life. In this work, three vibrant pale nude colored lilies open their blooms amidst bright green grasses. Rupe succeeds at capturing the immediacy of his subjects be it flowers, buildings or people. Read below for an amusing profile written about the artist in 2003: You‘ve likely seen him on the streets of Hudson, seated before his canvas in a multi-colored paint daubed t-shirt and shorts, his straw hat providing shade for all but his tanned forearms and knees. His splattered Technicolor Walkman tape player...
