Joan Miró
Nébuleuse (Nebula), 1958

1958

About the Item

Nebula is an exciting intellectual piece that blends the artistic and scientific sensibilities of Miró. Composed of red, blue, yellow and green circles floating along a black ring, these elements orbit around a curiously human-like figure that is punctuated by a star form and unidentifiable symbol. A nebula is defined as a cloud of interstellar dust that absorbs and reflects radiation, thereby becoming visible as a luminous patch in an otherwise dark environment. Miro's luminous nebula is filled with bright and crisp dots of color that are accentuated by the black background of the circular orbit path. Perhaps the most curious element of this work is the horizontal human figure in the center of the orbit that is also mysteriously encased in a black background. While the color dots along the orbit line evoke a sense of movement, the figure is in a contrasting stagnant state. In this sense, this figure becomes more alive by virtue of the orbiting dots. The entire work embodies the classic playful and intellectual qualities of Miro's trademark style. Created in 1958, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. Published by Maeght, Paris this work is numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower left. • Composition sur fond jaune
    By Fernand Léger

utting a new spin on one of his favorite subjects, Léger here depicts tree trunks and logs as objects in space rather than related to the ground. The gnarled branches form an abstract still-life composition, twisting and turning in unanticipated directions. The earthy browns, greens, and yellows contrast with the bold black outlines. The logs appear as though arranged on a platter, presented to the viewer for contemplation. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the tiny box...
