Richard Anuszkiewicz
“I’m interested,” Richard Anuszkiewicz (1930–2020) once said, “in making something romantic out of a very, very mechanistic geometry.” Anuszkiewicz sought to achieve this romance through works juxtaposing vibrant colors in geometric configurations. The perceptual effects he created helped define the American Op art movement.
Anuszkiewicz studied color theory at Yale under Josef Albers and was greatly influenced by Albers’s approach. “The image in my work has always been determined by what I wanted the color to do,” Anuszkiewicz explained in a 1974 catalogue. “Color function becomes my subject matter, and its performance is my painting.”
He departed from his mentor, however, in the pulsating, illusory qualities he gave his work. One of his most famous paintings, Deep Magenta Square (1978), although similar in composition to Albers’s “Homage to the Square” series, is distinctly Op art in the way the striations surrounding the central square seem to vibrate and jump off the canvas.
Anuszkiewicz spent his entire career exploring optical effects through the manipulation of line and color, producing spectacular and timeless pieces of art. “Working with basic ideas will always be exciting,” he said in 1977. “And if a color or form is visually exciting in any profound sense, it will be that way in 10 or 20 years from now.”

- Knots in Green, Monotype/Paper, 20 x 20, Venezuelan Artist, Geometric AbstractLocated in Houston, TXKnots in Green: Monotype on archival paper Size: 20 x 20 by South American/Venezuelan artist Luisa Duarte is an example of geometric abstract art . Luisa Duarte works out of her studio in Houston, Texas. Price is unframed. Price for frame can be quoted and turn around from wholesale frame is approximately 3 weeks or less. Luisa Duarte’s works has a strong connection with her Latin American roots, with special focus in the geometrical abstract movement, a movement adopted by Latin America during the late 50’s. It was very prominent in Venezuela. Probably the most prominent collection of geometric abstract art was given to MOMA by Patricia Phelps de Cisneros who now resides in the USA. Her works are focused on explorations of shapes, lines , color and also on memories of her childhood in a promising country. Those memories are transformed into dynamic works invoking good energies to bring back what we have lost. In these complex geometrical systems, objects intersect, merge and collide, producing negative spaces that call the viewer to attention. In some cases, the almost imperceptibly off-kilter placement of geometrical elements within a composition speaks to her emphasis on relationships - the objects always exist in relationship to each other. There is a constant interest in constructing and deconstructing, and the consideration of endless juxtapositions. There are other works by Luisa Duarte available on 1stdibs and can be found by searching her name.
