Pablo Picasso
One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.
“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.
Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Very versatile artist who has also experimented with drawing, opera sets, video projections or acoustic installations.1 He is known for his large sculptures made up of letters and numbers.2 Born in Barcelona in 1955, he studied at the Llotja School and the Sant Jordi Superior School of Fine Arts. Trajectory In a first stage, his work reflects an interest in issues related to volume, space and tension. In 1983-1984 he began to mold iron with the casting technique and developed a sculptural concept of zoomorphic forms using cuts and folds. In 1986 he started working with cast iron, and later he used glass, resin, lights and sounds. Since 1996 he has also been dedicated to creating elements and sets for opera and theater productions, mainly in collaboration with the company La Fura dels Baus. He also stands out as a draftsman and engraver. In 2008 he made the sculpture called "Alma del Ebro" in Zaragoza (Aragon) on the occasion of the International Water Exhibition held there. This sculpture is 11 meters high and is located in front of the Palacio de Congresos, on the banks of the Ebro river. The letters represent cells of the human body, which is made up of more than 60% water. Its white letters and hollow structure invite the viewer to look inside and reflect on the relationship between human beings and water. In December 2012, he was elected the winner of the 2013 National Prize for Graphic Art awarded by the National Calcography and which recognizes the artist's career in the field of graphic art.3 In 2012 he produced the poster for the Festival de la Mercè in Barcelona.
