Gary Hume Art

British, b. 1962

British artist Gary Hume paints distinctively flat, electrically hued canvases that collectors and viewers easily discern as his work. With strong elements of Pop art, intertwined with abstract and Surrealist elements, he depicts familiar objects and people, often in distorted poses or bearing exaggerated characteristics.

Hume practices focused experimentation. He fully immerses himself into a set of ideas and techniques, creating numerous variations on a theme. After he's satisfied that he's gone as far as with a topic, he moves on to new motifs and materials. In all his work, he invites viewers to contemplate themselves as they ponder a piece.

Born in Tenterden, England, Hume attended Homewood School, a secondary school that specializes in media and visual arts on top of a standard public education and, in 1988, graduated from Goldsmiths College in London.

In the 1990s, he joined the Young British Artists (YBA), a disparate group of creators including Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, that mostly came out of Goldsmiths, with a mission to propagate the “Cool Britannia” cultural movement.

In his early career, Hume received acclaim for a series of door life-size paintings (and, later, rugs) depicting hospital doors. He soon pivoted to painting animals on aluminum sheets, and followed his fancy into a number of other disparate projects. In 2005, he reprised the door theme with the twist of anthropomorphizing these otherwise still-life subjects and setting them up in pairs to represent lovers.

Hume has shown in numerous exhibitions over the course of his career. Including shows in museums and galleries in Italy, Germany, Austria and Oxford. He was nominated for Britain's Turner Prize in 1996 and won the British Jerwood Prize in 1997. He's since gone on to present at many more exhibitions and win various awards, including his election to the level of Royal Academician in 2001.

Hume currently lives and works between London and New York State, where he continues to explore new projects and produce new and exciting art.

KAWS Black Along The Way (black KAWS Along The Way companion)
By KAWS
Located in NEW YORK, NY
KAWS Black Along The Way Companion. New and unopened in its original packaging. The KAWS Along The Way figurine is a rendition of the artist's 2013 eighteen-foot wood sculpture originally exhibited at Mary Boone gallery NY. The KAWS Along The Way figurine is a rendition of the artist's 2013 18 foot wood sculpture originally exhibited at Mary Boone gallery NY. Along the Way presents a unique pose for KAWS’s signature Companion characters. KAWS' design features two of his iconic companions leaning on each other for emotional support, hands heavy, and eyes cast downward. Two years later, KAWS supersized the composition, installing an 18-foot-tall wooden version of Along the Way in the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum, which the museum also acquired for its permanent collection. Large scale versions of Along the Way have also been exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Yorkshire Sculpture Park in England, the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Texas. Medium: Painted Vinyl Cast Resin. Year: 2019. 10.5 x 9 inches. New in original box; excellent condition. From a sold out edition of unknown. Shipped securely from New York. KAWS is an American graffiti artist and designer known for his toys, paintings, and prints. Born Brian Donnelly on November 4, 1974 in Jersey City, NJ, KAWS graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and went on to work in animation. “When your whole art is based on the lettering you choose, you kinda figure out what ones work together. I just liked the shapes of the k, a, w, s,” he explained of his moniker. Having started as a graffiti artist in New York in the early 1990s, KAWS began reworking advertisements in his distinctive style. Pop Art and culture permeate his cartoonish Companion series of figurines, which bear a resemblance to the works of Takashi Murakami. The artist is also known for his large scale public installations, such as 2019’s KAWS: Holiday which was installed in the Hong Kong harbor during Basel Hong Kong. In 2019, THE KAWS ALBUM (2005) sold at auction for a record $14.8 million, breaking his previous record of $2.7 million which was set in 2018. This work is a take on the Beatles' famous 1967 album cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but instead replaced with characters from The Simpsons with the artist's signature Xs drawn across their eyes and skull. After years in the industry, KAWS gained approval from his peers in the street art world and more recently prestige from the museum and gallery worlds. His work today can be found in the collections at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Rosenblum Collection in Paris. KAWS currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Related Categories Shepard Fairey. Street Art. Damien Hirst. Art toys. Kaws Companion. Kaws toys...

Cats (Red), original silkscreen, hand signed 87/150 with official & gallery COAs
By Ai Weiwei
Located in New York, NY
Ai Weiwei Cats (Red), 2022 Screen print on Saunders Waterford 300gsm paper Hand signed, dated, and numbered 87/150 by Ai Weiwei on the front 13 1/2 × 17 inches Unframed This print was originally published by Kettle's Yard - before it rapidly sold out. It is accompanied by the Certificate of Authenticity issued by the publisher to the original owner. The print was editioned by master printer, Kip Gresham at The Print Studio, Cambridge for Kettle's Yard. It was made using an original drawing ‘cut’ into an acrylic sheet. The image is then reversed when printed. Description from the publisher: "Drawing has been fundamental to Ai Weiwei’s artistic practice from an early age. He also has a longstanding love of cats, and they appear frequently in the artist’s social media posts. Many cats used to roam his studio in Beijing. As part of the Kettle’s Yard exhibition, Ai’s ‘Cats wallpaper’ (2015) will be displayed in the Castle Street window. This artwork was originally exhibited as ‘Studio Cats’ in the exhibition Andy Warhol / Ai Weiwei at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, reflecting both artists’ mutual love of cats. For Kettle’s Yard, the drawing of Maple and Birch has been inserted among the other cats depicted on the wallpaper." Quote from Ai Weiwei: "I like cats very much because of their independent character, alertness and understanding of human beings; I have feelings approximating to reverence for them. Cats have been regarded as psychic animals since ancient times, no matter in China or ancient Greece. What’s even more interesting is that if a selfie of mine would be seen by 100 people, a cat photo...
