Oliver Clare Art
British, 1853-1927
Oliver Clare was born in 1853, to the renowned still-life artist George Clare. The Clare family members were Victorian artists who specialized in, and were well known for their highly finished and precisely detailed still life and flower paintings.
Oliver spent most of his artistic life in Birmingham. Though there are no records indicating where he received his training, one can be quite certain that most, if not all, of it was from his father. Their stippling technique and choice of subject matter are almost identical.
While Oliver lived in Birmingham he was commissioned by a local health firm "Health Food Stores" to paint still-lives to be reproduced on postcards and posters.
Clare exhibited many paintings throughout his lifetime and is most often associated with the Artists of the West Midlands and the North. He exhibited: eighteen works at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham; three at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and six at the Manchester City Art Gallery. Throughout the late 1870's and early 1880's he lived in London where he exhibited several works there at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.(Biography provided by The Stag Gallery)

Still Life of Fruit & Still Life of Flowers
Oil on canvas, pair, both signed & dated ‘92
Image size: 6 inches x 9 inches (each)
Size including frame: 13 inches x 16 inches (each)
An appealing pair of still life paintings by Oliver Clare. The first painting shows primroses and lilac blossom next to a red berry. In the second, damsons can be seen next to apples and a strawberry.
Oliver Clare was born in Birmingham in 1853, the son of the flower artist George Clare (1839-1890) and his wife Elizabeth Bowen. His brother Vincent Clare (1856-1917) also became an artist and both would have received tuition from their father who influenced their style and subject matter. At the age of 18 he enlisted as a soldier in the Kings Own regiment, but gave this up to become a full time artist. Like his father, Clare specialised in still life paintings, containing fruit and garden flowers, often on mossy banks.
Sometime after 1871, he moved to London where he married Emma Mary Webb...

The first Eyckmans’ painting to employ a brighter, golden palette, this everyday kitchen scene explores the differing textures of the objects within. The artist’s love of all things French is exemplified here with antique pottery, a starched linen tablecloth, breadboard and, of course, fruit and favorite cheeses. Note the superb shadowing of the board extending over the table, the detailing in the chèvre and paper wrapping to the left, and the asymmetrical cluster of stemmed Muscat grapes, all illuminated by easterly light. Classical in perspective and execution, but with a more contemporary feel that derives from the use of color and light, this painting marks a transformational point in the artist’s work.
This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...
