Empire Ormolu and Green Marble Four Glass Clock, Eagle Antique French

About the Item

A stunning original antique French clock by the illustrious maker Charles Hour, circa 1890. It is of the beautifully restrained Empire design in a sumptuous green variegated specimen marble and ormolu (finely gilded bronze). To the top is a beautifully modelled spread eagle. The case is glazed with beveled glass to four sides to allow the mercury compensated pendulum to be seen gently swinging. The dial is porcelain enamel with it's original blued steel Breguet hands. The French movement is of high quality and is by Charles Hour. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original, we have replaced the mercury with silver steel for safety. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a sonorous gong. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send it to you. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition with no damage. The marble is also excellent with just some slight nibbles to the edges. There are some small chips to the corners of the glass panels and a light scratch on the front door. Charles Hour marks on the movement backplate Charles Victor HOUR, one of the co-founders of HOUR LAVIGNE which still produces some of the finest and most spectacular clocks today, began as an apprentice at 11 years of age. Twenty years later, he bought out a failing manufacture and in 1891 took on an associate - Diette. Together they became one of the most important clock makers in France. Hour then associated himself with Maurice Lavigne and by the end of the 19th century, Hour Lavigne was the largest clock and timepiece manufacturer in France with over 800 employees. Complete with original pendulum and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. Dimensions of clock: inches: height 19 3/4", width 8 1/4", depth 6 1/2" centimetres: height 50.5 cm, width 21 cm, depth 16.5 cm.
