Pair of Vintage Chinese 'Tongzhi Style' Famille Noire Porcelain Ginger Jars

About the Item

A matching pair of vintage Chinese porcelain ginger jars, hand-crafted in China during the latter half of the 20th century, specifically the 1970s. Both ginger jars have been decorated in the Famille Noire style, with details inspired by a porcelain piece from the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty. Each jar has been meticulously painted with a figural scene featuring a blooming ‘Tree Peony,’ with its old branches arching and slaying outward. Each blossoming flower is elegantly depicted and colored in red and pink enamel tones, set against a dark sky of deep black. The scene is further enlivened and with brush strokes of glistening gold. This decorative scene is also a symbolic one: peonies represent good luck, love, and honor in Chinese culture. Both jars are in good condition for their age. There are some small areas where the enamel has come away due to their age. However it does not detract from their beauty.
