Crustacean Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica Plate

About the Item

A crustacean is hand-painted at the center of this rare Flora Danica porcelain plate by Royal Copenhagen. While Flora Danica porcelain is best known for its realistic depictions of the native flora of Denmark, this plate is part of a rare series of Flora Danica that captures the region's crustaceans. The Astacus fluviatilis, or European crayfish, is hand-painted at the center of the plate in lifelike detail, while its Latin name is inscribed on the reverse. Accented with a delicately gilded edge, this plate is exemplary of the artistry and detail synonymous with Royal Copenhagen creations. Once the porcelain supplier to the Queen of Denmark, Royal Copenhagen is known throughout the world for their quality craftsmanship and creative innovation. Founded in 1775 under the authority of Queen Juliane Marie, the first pieces ever produced were complex dining services for the Danish Royal Family. In 1790, Royal Copenhagen unveiled their Flora Danica pattern, now considered one of the most important and celebrated porcelain motifs ever created. Features "Royal Copenhagen" marks and Latin name on the underside Measures: 10 1/4” diameter x 1 1/2" high.
