Wayne Thiebaud
Paint Cans

1990

About the Item

"Paint Cans" is a lithograph in colors on wove paper made in 1990 by Wayne Thiebaud. The work is number 13 from an edition of 100. The work is signed in pencil, lower right, "Thiebaud 1990" and editioned in pencil, lower left, "13/100". The framed size is 43 1/2 x 37 x 2 1/4 inches. "Paint Cans" showcases Thiebaud's characteristic modern spin on an art history classic, the still life. As ever, Thiebaud reduces the composition to the most essential forms (cylinders), then works them back up with color and and his signature "halation" effect. Here Thiebaud makes the subject of the artwork the commercial-grade materials of the art-making itself, cans of paint. Similar to other post-war figurative artists working at the time, Thiebaud looks closely at everyday objects but imbues them with new meaning, here making ordinary cans of paint into luminscent objects. The artist's use of color theory to convey depth is noticeable in how the silver cans are rendered with colorful veritcal stripes to make them appear three-dimensional. Another edition of this print is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
