Henri Matisse
Modern Master Colour Lithograph 'Souvenirs d'Océanie' on Wove paper

1954

About the Item

Bold modern colours synonymous with the modern art movement make up this original Mourlot printed Henri Matisse lithograph, after a gouache on paper cut-out. The cut-out is based on a photograph that Matisse took of a ship from his window in Tahiti in 1930. According to Matisse, it took 15 years for the memories of his trip to return, but they shaped several of his cut-out pieces. The impression of mooring lines and the boat's hull can be seen within the abstraction of the piece. Signed in the plate with the date of the original cut-out piece, 1953. From the portfolio ‘Dernières Oeuvres de Matisse 1950-1954’, known as Verve Vol. IX No. 35 & 36. Printed by Mourlot in Paris. Includes appraisal and authenticity paperwork. Framed with museum quality materials including acid-free matting. Paper size: 13.5 x 9.5 inches
