Pablo Picasso
Danseurs et Joueur de Diaule (Dancers and Diaulos Player), 1956

1956

About the Item

Danseurs et Joueur de Diaule (Dancers and Diaulos Player), A.R. 341 can be compared to several other white earthenware pieces created by Picasso in 1956. Each depicts the carefree imagery of dancers, musicians, and fauns to which the artist returns time and again. Framed under a sloping mountain, two figures dance with arms raised above their heads, hands clasped in a spontaneous gesture. Leafy trees and flowers mark both ends of the composition. To the right the diaulos player lends his music while a reclining figure in the foreground listens; the bent knee mirrors the peak in the distance just as the musician's linear form echoes the thick tree trunk at right. The raised image occupies real space, its volume adding substance. Created in 1956, this Madoura round/square dish of white earthenware clay is numbered from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse. Catalogue Raisonné: This work is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices accompanying the final sale of the work): 1. Pablo Picasso Visage d’homme (Man’s Head), 1968-1969 A.R. 570 showcases the artist’s unrivaled ability to illustrate human nuance. Each aspect of the man’s face, from his furrowed brow to his side gaze is carefully illustrated. The crowding of horizontal lines on his brow and vertical lines on his nose bring a sense of tension to his face, which compounds the furrowed brow. There are only two colors on the plaque, black and red, but the semi circle of hair atop the mans head...
