Pablo Picasso
Visage aux yeux ronds (Round-eyed Face), A.R. 451

1960

About the Item

Created in 1960, ceramic Round-eyed Face (Visage aux yeux ronds) A.R. 451 is a Madoura round/square plate of red earthenware clay stamped with the ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO’ and ‘MADOURA PLEIN FEU’ pottery stamps on the underside; numbered from the edition of 100 on the underside. Pablo Picasso ceramic Visage aux yeux ronds (Round-eyed Face), 1960 A.R. 451 shows Picasso’s mastery with the ceramic medium. An expressive face stands out from the earthy red clay. The expression conveys surprise and curiosity, portrayed through the circular eyes and semi-circles that live above and below the pupils, making the eyes appear to be open widely. The nose is created by gouging the surface of the clay to create a textured oval indentation. It is punctuated by two dots of clay to represent nostrils. The mouth is created by lines in relief, as well another gouged section of clay. Some small lines at the bottom may indicate a beard. Using no added color, only the nature clay, Picasso created a wonderful face. It is created in playful ways, characteristic of Picasso’s portraiture. Instead of creating a hyper realistic face, Picasso instead has chosen to relay feelings and emotions instead. The texture of the clay adds a complex element, and the use of relief means that the play of light on the face casts shadows that cause the face to change with the changing of the light. Picasso has created a dynamic work of art in Visage aux yeux ronds (Round-eyed Face), 1960 A.R. 451. A whimsical fish sits placidly in the center of Pablo Picasso ceramic Service Poisson Plate R (“Fish” Service Plate), 1947 A.R. 21. A sweeping light blue back and a peach colored belly make up the body of the fish. Light blue fins crown the back of the fish and a delicate tail parts off the back. Dashes of yellow encircle the rim of the creamy colored bowl, brightening the entire work and creating a dreamy abstracted pattern around the fish. The colors emit a tropical sensation, reminding the viewer of the warmth of the sun and the salty taste of the ocean air. Picasso, who often riffs on ancient Greek...

Pablo Picasso Visage d’homme (Man’s Head), 1968-1969 A.R. 570 showcases the artist’s unrivaled ability to illustrate human nuance. Each aspect of the man’s face, from his furrowed brow to his side gaze is carefully illustrated. The crowding of horizontal lines on his brow and vertical lines on his nose bring a sense of tension to his face, which compounds the furrowed brow. There are only two colors on the plaque, black and red, but the semi circle of hair atop the mans head...
