Qing Furniture

QING STYLE

The last imperial dynasty from 1644 to 1912 was a time of change in China, beginning with the invasion by Manchurian forces that ended the Ming dynasty and established the Shunzhi Emperor. The expansion of exportation and trade that had bolstered the arts during the Ming era continued, as Qing dynasty furniture involved the same attention to craftsmanship with expert construction techniques in hardwood pieces that were assembled with mortise and tenon joints rather than nails or glue. Together, these eras comprise a golden age of Chinese furniture design.

Ming-style furniture is simple and elegant with clean lines. Chairs of the period and other Ming furniture made an impression on Scandinavian modernist Hans Wegner and his streamlined seating, for example. Whereas Qing-style furniture is elaborate, with an increasing influence from the West leading to lavish carving inspired by the European Baroque and Rococo styles. And while many of the forms that define examples of the latter are common within classical Chinese furniture, such as curving and folding chairs as well as large screens, Qing designs are laden with ornamentation. Frequently, the carved motifs and inlaid designs in mother-of-pearl were auspicious, such as peonies for wealth or dragons for luck. Bats were symbols of happiness in the design of Qing furniture, with one of the characters in the word for bat, bianfu, being a homophone for fu, or “fortune.”

While several types of wood were used in the construction of Qing beds, tables, storage pieces and seating, today’s collectors know that the most prized were the rare rosewoods zitan and huanghuali. They were both sourced from Hainan, China’s largest island, and are marked by a rich luster that occurs naturally, without the application of lacquer or other decorative materials. Many of the most popular woods were imported from southeast Asia, adding to their value. Red sandalwood was also sought after for its durability and connection with Chinese medicine, with some chairs being made for health benefits.

Chinese Porcelain Sang-de-Boeuf Ox-Blood Flambe Glaze Red Lidded Jar Mark 20c
Located in Richmond, CA
Discover the rich artistry embodied in this Sang de Boeuf flambe glaze globular lidded jar, a piece that resonates with the grandeur of Chinese ceramic craftsmanship. The jar is distinguished by its vibrant ox-blood red glaze, a characteristic feature of the Sang de Boeuf or "Ox Blood" style, which is celebrated for its deep, flowing red hues that evoke a sense of luxury and historical depth. Resting on a crackle glaze ground base, the jar presents a harmonious silhouette, with its bulbous body offering a pleasing contrast to the flat lid that adorns it. The lid, which features a central finial for ease of handling, adds a balanced aesthetic to the piece, marrying form and function in a seamless display of craftsmanship. A significant highlight of this jar is the presence of the four-character mark "QIAN LONG NIAN ZHI", rendered in underglaze blue to the center of the base. This apocryphal mark, a nod to the revered Qianlong Emperor's reign, adds a layer of historical and cultural significance to the piece, connecting it to a period of flourishing artistry and innovation. Whether showcased as a focal point in a room or as a prized possession in a collection, this Sang de Boeuf jar...

Early 20th Century Large Doors from Shanxi, China
Located in Singapore, SG
These large doors originated from Shanxi province, China, and are approx. 100-120 years old. Made of Elm & Pine, the most unique part about these doors are the many signs that are affixed on it, do note that although the doors are antique, these signs are added much later on. Besides the actual door number and road name, the others are the many accolades that this family has earned. Starting from the red plate on the left, this was given by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government. The Chinese words translate into "family of glory", this was to given to the household as a member of the family had retired from the military, to recognise his contribution to the country; it could also had been given to the family if the soldier was sacrificed during his service. Next to it is a small blue plate...

Qing Dynasty Painted Sideboard with Distressed Patina, Three Drawers, Two Doors
Located in Yonkers, NY
A Qing Dynasty period painted sideboard from the 19th century with distressed patina and three drawers over two doors. This Qing Dynasty period painted sideboard from the 19th century is a remarkable piece of historical furniture, showcasing the rich heritage and skilled artistry of its era. The sideboard features a distressed patina, lending it an aura of time-worn elegance and storied past. The wear of the patina adds character and depth, making this piece a striking focal point in any room. Its red lacquer on one side, a traditional Chinese finish, brings a vibrant contrast to the piece's overall muted tones. This touch of color adds an element of surprise and visual interest. The brass hardware on the three drawers over two doors enhances the sideboard's antique charm, providing a beautiful contrast to the distressed wood. The faint hand-painted floral décor, now subtle due to age, adds a delicate and artistic touch to the sideboard, reminiscent of traditional Chinese art. Inside, an inner shelf offers practical storage space, making this piece as functional as it is beautiful. In a modern home, this Qing Dynasty sideboard...
