Abstract Mixed Media

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Two original abstract lithographs on plate signed limited edition shopping bag
Located in New York, NY
Frank Stella The Dayton's Bag, 1984 Two (2) separate offset lithographs: one on each side of a mixed media paper shopping bag 18 1/2 × 16 × 4 inches Plate signed "Frank Stella '84" twice: once on each side of the bag (see photos) This paper shopping bag with two different color offset lithographs (one on each side) was created by Frank Stella along with his longtime publisher Tyler Graphics. The work is plate signed Frank Stella on the top of each side, and each side bears the printed text, "Dayton's Salutes the Opening of Walker Art Center's New Galleries. Premiere Exhibition Selections from Tyler Graphics, 23 September '84 to 17 May '85." This elegant work, produced with the highest quality lithography by Frank Stella at Tyler Graphics, was created in a limited quantity solely for VIP collectors at that one day's event as it was a true one-off creation. Not too many of them have survived a quarter century on, and rarely in such good condition. Not too many people you know can boast that they possess a Frank Stella shopping bag. Note that this listing is for one two sided shopping bag, each side with a different color lithograph - so it's actually two Frank Stella lithographs...

Gravitational Forces (Diptych) - Large Scale Abstract Artwork
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Arizona artist Gail Titus paints vibrant abstract compositions in acrylic on canvas with a focus on texture and color. The geometric planes of her artworks and the texture in her movements are boldly hatched in contours of energetic brushstrokes. She sends the viewer on a journey of discovery across the painted surface to continually re-discover the depth of hue, composition, and dimension. This large, one-of-a-kind dynamic and textural painting is a diptych measuring a total of 48 inches high by 96 inches wide. It is comprised of two 48 inch square panels, each is wired and ready to hang. The sides of this highly textural artwork are painted as a continuation of the front. It does not require framing. It is signed and titled by the artist on the back. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable U.S. and worldwide shipping available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. After working as a ceramic artist for more than twenty years creating wall sculptures and commissioned installation work, Gail Titus has been focusing more extensively on pursuing her long-time interest in abstract painting. Her detailed studies of abstract painting techniques lead Gail Titus to develop works on canvas using acrylic paint and a carefully chosen mix of unconventional tools and techniques. The primary focus has been on surface development and exploring textures. Her artworks have been acquired by corporations and private collectors throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia. They have been featured on hit TV shows such as "The Catch" on ABC. Artist Comments
Artist Darlene McElroy creates an intricate and fun mixed-media portrait with references from Mexican day of the dead motifs and renaissance art. "He was a smooth guy, very debonair, and quite the raconteur," says Darlene. "He dressed for every occasion, always stood out in a crowd, and was a heartbreaker."

About the Artist
Darlene McElroy sees creating art as similar to reading Turkish coffee grounds. A story becomes revealed as one looks at the surface, texture and color. Her works use a variety of materials ranging from acrylic paints to photo transfers and collage. She currently lives in New Mexico and has been greatly influenced by the work of Robert Rauschenberg. She encourages viewers to search for their narrative interpretation when viewing a work.

Originally intent on avoiding any direct involvement in the arts himself, he graduated from George Washington University with a B.A. in Japanese Studies followed by an all-but-completed M.A. in the same subject from the University of Michigan (to this day he insists the actual writing of the master’s thesis should just be considered a minor formality). In between these academic respites, he lived in Japan working as an apprentice to a Japanese woodblock artist, studied Zen meditation, and was employed as a disc jockey...
