About the Item

PABLO PICASSO 1881-1973 Málaga 1881- 1973 Mougins (Spanish) Title: Caricature of General de Gaulle and Two Women, from: Series 347 Caricature du général de Gaulle et deux femmes, 1968 Technique: Original Hand Signed and Numbered Drypoint, Aquatint with Scraper on Wove Paper Paper size: 47.4 x 56.5 cm. / 18.6 x 22.2 x in. Image size: 31.5 x 39.5 cm. / 12.4 x 15.5 in. Additional Information: This drypoint, aquatint with scraper is hand signed in pencil by the artist “Picasso” at the lower right margin. It is dated in the plate “21.4.68.I.” It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 50, at the lower left margin. There were also 17 artist’s proofs aside from the standard edition. This etching was printed in 1968 by the Crommelynck Brothers in France and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris the following year. This work is the 45th composition in the 347 series. Note: The “347 Series” was, in printmaking, the undertaking which defined late Picasso. This prodigious outpouring of work, dating from March 16th–October 5th, 1968, deals with all his old themes and fantasies, adding an obsession newly central in the late 60s, the artist as voyeur. It is in this role, rather than that of a protagonist, that the artist figures in these fantastic narrations. In order to be able to work with full freedom and concentration, Picasso had his printers, the brothers Crommelynck, bring the etching plates and hand press to his farmhouse near Cannes. Provenance: Estate of Henri Marie Petiet (1894-1980) Literature: Bloch, G. (1968). Pablo Picasso: Tome II, Catalogue of the printed graphic work 1966-69. Berne: Editions Kornfeld et Klipstein. Reference: Bloch 1525 Condition: Excellent condition.

Loevenstein 22" at the lower right margin. It is also tilted "Bettler" (Beggars) and inscribed "Handabzug" (Hand printed) in pencil at the lower left margins. It is dedicated “pour ma chere et jamais ce debacle, Fedor, Zoppot Sommer 22” (for my dear never this debacle [sic], Fedor, Sopot (Poland) Summer (19)22.) This work was hand printed by the artist himself in the early 1920's in a small edition. Originally from Czechoslovakia, Fédor Löwenstein (Munich, 1901 - Nice, 1946) studied art in Germany before moving to Paris in 1923, attracted by its artistic influence. There he mixed with the painter André Lhote from Bordeaux and joined the Groupe des Surindépendants in 1936. His style evolved from Cubism to a form of Romantic abstraction. In 1938, he painted La Chute (The Fall), inspired by the signing of the Munich Agreement ratifying the dismantling of the Czechoslovakia created in 1918. France’s entry into the war drove him to leave the capital for Mirmande, a ruined village in the Drôme region, where Lhote held a summer academy. Löwenstein then divided his time between Mirmande and Nice where his mother and sister lived, but had to take refuge for a time in the Abbey of Aiguebelle. He fell ill in the autumn of 1943 and went to Paris to see a doctor; he died in Nice in 1946. Exhibited: Fédor Lowenstein...
