R B Bhaskaran Art

Indian, b. 1942

Paintings by leading Indian artist R B Bhaskaran, often large-scale and vibrant, use a stripped-down imagery that celebrates form, color and ground. Only the best artists make a success from such simplicity. They capture our imagination and draw us into the work. These paintings allow us to explore intangible thoughts, feelings, and fleeting private moments. Bhaskaran’s paintings are great artworks, and great art teaches us something about ourselves.

Modern and contemporary art from India is now international in its collecting base. Leading artists such as R B Bhaskaran have always operated on a global platform. Born in 1942 in Madras, India, Bhaskaran made work that was an important part of the exciting explosion of modern art that began in India in the 1960s. He moved between India, the US and the UK, working and learning with some of the best.

Just like those of his contemporary, Howard Hodgkin, Bhaskaran’s paintings are distinctive. The brushstrokes and limited palette of strong colors point us straight to the artist and the spontaneity of his forms. While his images may appear to be simple in their choice of objects and shapes, they are anything but, which is why they hold our attention and draw us in. Each work, peppered with mark-making, lines, dots and color spots, creates paths that expands the narratives the paintings offer.

We see plants, trees and animals, pots and vases, people and cats. Lots and lots of images of a cat, which in Bhaskaran’s hands becomes a timeless form that mirrors and confronts us. Human-like, long-limbed, independent and commanding attention, it is primarily through the anthropomorphic image of the cat that Bhaskaran has chosen to explore his painting, his life as an artist and the world he inhabits.

Ultimately these are great paintings to live with. They have a weight to them, a quality that comes from a great painter who is an acknowledged master of his craft.

R B Bhaskaran trained at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, in what was then Madras, today Chennai. He obtained his masters in the UK and from 1970–80 expanded his practice at the Smithsonian in the United States. He has held prestigious positions within the art world in India including as chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi in Delhi between 2002–07. His work is held in major public and private collections worldwide. Bhaskaran continues to live and work in Chennai, South India.

Abstract Oil Painting Gold Leaf Stars 2 of 2
By Jacques Lamy
Located in Surfside, FL
This one is unsigned. the second one is signed. Born in Paris in 1946 and raised in the heart of an idyllic French countryside near the Loire Valley, Jacques Lamy began painting at a very early age. Jacques completed his formal artistic training at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieur des Arts Decoratifs (Paris) in 1971. While there, he received the highest peer recognition in European Arts; the coveted Prix de Rome award for painting. Jacques Lamy’s career as an artist, designer and art teacher took him from his native France to life abroad in Spain, Africa, and the United States. His broad artistic interests and his classic training in art and design have enabled him to enjoy a wide variety of artistic experiences from designing furniture, lamps, tapestries, and elegant garden statuary to creating large scale murals for public viewing and enjoyment. in addition to his renowned mural work, Jacques received international recognition for his decorative fresco paintings. Jacques personal artistic style is very much a melding of old and new – a merging of a classically trained artist with a modern artistic vision. The medium is multi-media and the composition has a modern, abstract quality but the Old World training in design and composition lends the whole an air of classical grace. Let Her Go - Thickly Painted Impasto Surface Oil Painting with Dream-Like Scene
By Victor Wang
Located in Chicago, IL
Victor Wang's highly textured paintings involve thick layers of paint over collaged images from the Tang Dynasty. In "Let Her Go", the foreground shows a modern female figure sitting upon the side of a boat which gives the impression she is wearing wings and about to take flight. Upon closer look, there are various scenes taking place around her in the water - warriors with knives drawn, a jeep in pursuit of some unseen enemy, a cauldron boiling over. Influence by the Renaissance Masters, Titian and Rembrandt for their glazing and layering techniques respectively, the artist builds the surface using heavy paint, swirling and mixing the color on the canvas. The end result is a poetic and emotionally powerful representation of the human form. Victor Wang Let Her Go oil on canvas 48h x 60w in 121.92h x 152.40w cm VWG011 My path through life has been adventurous, exciting, and dream-like. My experience of settling into America in search of better opportunities has been both challenging and inspiring. I use the human face as a vehicle to paint human experiences - worry and wonder, sadness and pleasure - which reflect the emotional stage directly tied to my immigration experiences. I grew up amongst the sunflower fields in northern China. In my childhood years, I played under the bright, yellow sunflowers with my brothers everyday. China’s Cultural Revolution played an important part in my life. During that time, sunflowers were used as political allegories to depict how citizens of China should follow Mao who represented the sun, since sunflowers follow the sun’s movements. People eventually inferred the deception that this symbol masked. After graduating from high school, I was sent to a labor camp in the country for ‘reeducation’ during China’s Cultural Revolution. There, I was subject to grueling farm work. Often, I worked in corn and sunflower fields from sunrise to sunset. Thus, for me, sunflowers evoke both personal joy and sadness. Therefore, to deliver my complex feelings, I use sunflowers as a metaphor to connote my background and emotional stage. My incorporation of collages of figures from China’s Tang Dynasty represents my Chinese heritage and is a constant reminder of where I came from. The texture and earthiness on the canvas’s surface are inspired by the texture of the soil on the farm where I worked in China. Although I often gain great pleasure from the process of painting, it is most important to unfold expressively those feelings within myself. Wang belongs to a generation of immigrant painters from China, whose artistic background was defined by socialist realism but took advantage of their skills and broke away from that tradition to create new subjects in the U.S. “When I was a student during Cultural Revolution, Soviet realism art was among the dominant source of influence and it grabbed us like lightening...
