Spanish country antiques and lighting enrich a bedroom at Casa Taberna, a country-house hotel in the Castilian town of Pedraza. Saving the setting, which dates back to the 17th century, from tipping into a history lesson is that fireplace — the work of the hotel’s young Madrid-based designers, Gonzalo Machado and Mafalda Muñoz, of Casa Muñoz. “They used this room to smoke and preserve food,” Mafalda explains, “and the contrast between the smoky patina of the ceiling beams, which we deliberately preserved, and the new fireplace is quite special.” The couple sourced pieces from antiquaires in Madrid, adding curtains of Décors Barbares fabric and a very special desk chair they spotted on 1stDibs. “The Riaza chair is a design my father, Paco Muñoz, did in the 1950s,” Mafalda says.

The 1950s desk chair is by iconic Spanish designer Paco Muñoz, “who is an ongoing source of inspiration for us,” says his daughter Mafalda. “And it is always a pleasure to find his vintage designs on 1stDibs.”

Design philosophy?

“Today, true luxury is being surrounded by beautiful pieces in generous, comfortable spaces.”
