Robert Couturier Inc

Fabulous, Formal and Fun

Few young designers have made as big a splash as Robert Couturier did when he came on the scene more than 30 years ago. The French-born prodigy had masterminded the design and decor of La Loma, the opulent Mexican fiefdom of the billionaire Sir Jimmy Goldsmith. From then on, his commissions consisted of palaces, châteaus, grand mansions, penthouses and private jets. Yet for all their fizzy grandeur, there is always a rigor and rationality to Couturier’s interiors, not to mention an extraordinary wit in his marriages of the classic and contemporary. He describes the vibe of this Sagaponack, New York, living room as “English country house meets the Hamptons.” Colorful patterned textiles, like the Portuguese needlepoint rug and the Bhutanese woven-silk wall treatment, along with the stunning circular color-pencil drawing of a sea-snail shell by the Colombian artist Miguel Böhmer, both ground the room and accent the traditional furnishings. Occasional pieces, meanwhile, like the two pairs of vintage faux-bamboo benches and the Chinese half tables, found on 1stDibs, contribute to its cosmopolitan appeal.
