Yellow House Architects
From Cutting-Edge to Classical and Back
Elizabeth Graziolo has a stylistic breadth few architects can match. An alumna of The Cooper Union, a college famed for turning out architectural trailblazers, she became a partner at Peter Pennoyer Architects, a peerless purveyor of the classical tradition. Then, three years ago, she launched Yellow House Architects. A scholar of architectural history, Graziolo calls her studio’s commission to design a model apartment for the residential conversion of One Wall Street, Ralph Walker’s towering Art Deco palace of finance, “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Influenced by the sensuous organic forms of the building’s limestone facade, she selected a mix of biomorphic and traditional furnishings to spark a conversation between old and new. In the dining area, a simple but stately custom-designed burl-wood dining table plays counterpoint to R&Y Augousti’s surreal Melting dining chairs in bronze-patina brass and black shagreen, sourced on 1stDibs. While the pieces are highly contemporary, Graziolo notes, “their shape and material exude luxury.”
