Modern Moves in a Village Classic

From Fritz Lang’s Metropolis to Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, movie sets are magical places for Southern California native Stephen Shadley, who began his career as a scenic artist at 20th Century Fox. The New York City–based designer aimed to create something equally cinematic for the home of a writer-actor client, “evoking,” he explains, “a vintage Greenwich Village writer’s pied-à-terre and updating a historic Manhattan apartment without losing its original nineteenth-century charm.” The double-height living space incorporates a long minimalist kitchen, discreetly tucked under the mezzanine, as well as a dining area with a 1970s brass-pedestal Mastercraft dining table and Mario Bellini leather Cab chairs from Cassina — all sourced through 1stDibs. Across from the fireplace, Shadley’s generously proportioned channel-tufted custom sofa combines a tailored look with lounging comfort. Along with floor-to-ceiling shelves, a vintage Danish rosewood credenza from Porter & Plunk and WYETH’s blackened-stainless-steel Chrysalis coffee table offer opportunities to display books and decorative art. “My client had a very personal collection of art and memorabilia,” Shadley says. “Finding and designing furnishings that reflected those objects was key to making it feel like home.”
