“There is nothing really interesting to talk about if everything in a room is shiny, immaculate and brand-new,” says Corey Damen Jenkins, founder of a namesake studio. “Whenever there is a tension point between antiquity and modernity, practically every room inherits a soul and pedigree.” Responding to a client’s brief that the parlor of their coastal Maryland home be a multifunctional space, for playing games, casual dining, studying and lounging, the New York City–based designer brought in classic transitional furnishings and exotically romantic antique touches. He placed Dessin Fournir spoon-back dining armchairs around a 19th-century English library table and Dessin Fournir skirted club chairs around a Moorish-Syrian copper-tray cocktail table found on 1stDibs. Antique hand-painted chinoiserie murals inspired the vibrant color scheme, which includes a rich golden wall color that complements the space’s brass lighting, a Regency-style convex bulls-eye mirror and a gold-leaf-accented 18th-century secretary. “Although very traditional in style,” Jenkins says, “this room is certainly not lacking personality or a distinct point of view.”
