Area Interior Design
Approachable Opulence in Manhattan

In a historic New York City co-op building that Jacqueline Onassis once called home, AREA Interior Design founder Janine Carendi MacMurray fused Upper East Side elegance with family functionality. “The inspiration for this living room came from the beauty of Central Park: soft greens to echo the trees and reflective surfaces to amplify the park’s light, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the natural surroundings,” she says. A case in point is the scallop-backed banquette MacMurray designed to occupy a niche clad in distressed mirror tiles and illuminated by one of a pair of Barovier&Toso Murano-glass sconces she sourced from 1stDibs. The sophisticated space showcases the designer’s talent for creating bespoke furniture, exemplified by her mid-century-French-inflected slipper chairs and lacquered Neoclassical Moderne partner’s desk, which doubles as a games table. Grounded by a natural jute rug, the restrained luxury of these designs serves as a counterpoint to bold vintage choices, like 1970s brass-and-glass coffee tables, and 21st-century 1stDibs finds with a throwback flair: a set of biomorphic R&Y Augousti Cosmos nesting tables with tops of shagreen, shell and brass; and a pair of contemporary Italian stools with Machine Age gilded-iron bases. “Stepping away from the everyday helps me see things with fresh eyes — whether it’s art, architecture or even the way products are packaged in different countries,” MacMurray says. “And when I’m stuck, browsing through 1stDibs helps push me past creative blocks.”
