Heart and Soul

“While most people consider the kitchen the heart of the home, for us, it’s the living room and our fireplace,” says Christine Gachot, who shares her New York apartment — and an eponymous design firm — with her husband, John. The thoughtful layering of art and objects is what keeps that heart beating so beautifully. Favorite pieces include the Just Andersen metal vases on the mantel. “I absolutely love our growing collection,” says Christine. She and John custom designed the sofa, covered in a warm cinnamon velvet, and the black-lacquered coffee table, which they accompanied with a pebble-top side table by Ib Kofod-Larsen, Champignon Mignon stools from Under the Influence: Édition Maison Gerard and chairs from Danish makers Ole Wanscher and Erik Kolling Andersen. “What makes this home so remarkable is how the modern design elements, like the layered textures and bold pieces, work with the classic Candela architecture,” says Christine. A vintage Danish cabinet “from the early days of 1stDibs” shows the couple’s appreciation for rare gems, as do their beloved tomes from Potterton Books, also found through 1stDibs.
