Studio SFW
A Blue Haven in Brooklyn

With a penchant for saturated colors, lacquered walls, patterned carpets, lush fabrics, figurative wallpapers, modern art and contemporary statement lighting, Studio SFW transforms antique residences — like this richly detailed 1899 rowhouse in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood — into homes that put the fun into functional. For a family room that sits between the kitchen and a more formal parlor illuminated by a glass chandelier from 1stDibs, the design team — architects Rachael Stollar (seated) and Ward Welch and interior designer Erin Fearins — imagined a tented space. They bathed it in blue grasscloth wallpaper and hung from the ceiling a Currey & Company chandelier with a Jean Royère vibe. “We wanted to keep this room open visually,” Fearins says. “So, we had to arrange the furniture in an unconventional way, with the large, comfortable Kravet Jazz sofa up against one of the openings, which feels surprising and works well in giving the room its cozy, intimate feel.” A Nordic Knots rug with a tattoo pattern underlies the sofa as well as a pair of A. Rudin swivel chairs and Nickey Kehoe poufs, which provide extra seating for when the clients, a family of four, watch TV or just hang out. “At Studio SFW, we always aim to create comfortable spaces where people want to gather and spend time,” Fearins notes.
