About Charles Rutherfoord LTD

Charles Rutherfoord is an architectural designer whose work is founded in the structural and sculptural. Trained in architecture and history of architecture at Cambridge and interiors at Kingston, he is a Member of the Chartered Society of Designers.

Before setting up his own practice in 1984, he worked at Conran Associates designing offices for the Minister of Arts, Lord Gowrie, in Whitehall, for Lord Carrington at GEC, and the European headquarters for Seibu. Charles Rutherfoord Limited was incorporated in 2002.

His interest in planning and use of space has led to commissions for new architectural work and the re-structuring of houses, offices and shops. He is experienced in working with local authority planning departments and English Heritage on listed buildings. His fascination with the interaction of contemporary work and existing buildings extends to the placing and lighting of collections of furniture, paintings and sculpture. He achieves the tranquillity that characterises his work through innovative use of texture and rare clarity of detail. His passion for unexpected materials and association of colour is seen throughout his work including, more recently, garden and planting design. He is a member and past chairman of the Society of Garden Designers.

Charles Rutherfoord’s furniture design is enhanced by knowledge of past styles gained working at Christies Auctioneers for four years researching and cataloguing furniture. His furniture has been exhibited in London, New York, Tokyo and Milan.

His work has been published internationally.
