This vivid and highly detailed 19th-century hand-colored lithograph was published around 1865 by German geographer and scientific educator Traugott Bromme. It is one of the concluding plates from his influential *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, and this example focuses on an astonishing array of flying and crawling insects from multiple orders, carefully illustrated and labeled.
The print presents over 30 different insect species, including colorful examples of grasshoppers (5 and 6), crickets (4), and katydids, alongside various types of wasps (14), flies (15), and bees. A prominent dragonfly (16) spreads its wings across the upper center of the composition, counterbalanced by a damselfly and several delicate lacewing and butterfly species (20, 21).
In addition to these better-known insects, the plate also includes stick insects (18), mantids (5), cicadas (7), planthoppers, shield bugs, and aphids (27, 31). A particularly striking insect is the leaf mimic with bright yellow underwings (50), depicted in a lifelike resting pose with wings extended. Others, such as mayflies (17), webspinners, and beetles in flight, show the full range of wing structure and body types found in 19th-century entomological studies.
The diversity, coloring, and naturalism of this print reflect the scientific interest in entomology during the mid-19th century. Bromme's work made natural history accessible to a broad audience, and his prints remain highly desirable today for their educational value, artistry, and historical significance.
