Amagansett Cottage
Sitting on an unusually lengthy grassy lot surrounded by towering hedges, this property embodies a quintessential Hamptons setting with multiple satellite structures including a pool house, modern barn and a wellness shed. Built in 1975, the main house is a modestly proportioned shingle style dwelling. Inside, classic wide tongue and groove walls are brought back to the first floor and painted in pale sage, setting the tone of a distinctly cottage aesthetic. In the living room, the lower ceiling with exposed rafters naturally creates a cozy feeling with a fireplace anchoring the space and a set of French doors opening onto the yard. Together, exquisite antiques including an elephant shaped end table carved entirely out of a single piece of timber from Africa and a table lamp made of a chinese porcelain jar in crackle glaze topped with a hand-sewn concertina shade, are mixed with simple upholstery pieces in modern form. Every corner of the room is an intriguing vignette in its own right.
Familiar elements echo through all the rooms in the house weaving a common thread: back on the ground floor, a guest room is papered completely, wall to ceiling, in the most beautiful red floral pattern “Wild Tulip” from Soane, with a green wall sconce hanging above two wrought iron twin beds, completed with indigo quilts and a pair of antique French brutalist wooden chairs. In an adjacent office, wainscotting is treated in color blocks - the plank portion is painted in Benjamin Moore, Pearl and the upper sector in Farrow & Ball, “Oxford Stone”, with a 1940s Italian Botanical pendant providing a soft glow for the moody hues.
