Chelsea Pre-war
A gentle layering of curated materials, antiques and collectables help to establish a serene space nestled
within the bustling city. Select ornate details and a play on finishes are stippled onto the foreground of the
penthouse’s modern canvas, celebrating a distinguishing mix of eras and styles - reflecting the very character that defines Chelsea as the art center of the city.
An antique peephole from the 1920s Speakeasy era permits entry into the penthouse, as the living room
and kitchen greet and mingle in an elegant palette that speaks volume. Drenched in Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal,
a rich aubergine, an entire wall of classic shaker style cabinetry flank the otherwise pared back plaster
brick fireplace; glimmers from antique brass hardwares and fluted glass add a nostalgic note to the
beguiling backdrop; an antique oval dining table enveloped by four Tobia Scarpa Pigreco dining chairs. A
gentle glow from a vintage Swedish chandelier from ASEA bounces off a gilded antique French mirror on
the mantle, juxtaposed by the raw and powerful form of the steel metal sculpture by local artist Barney
Bellinger. In the adjacent living space, two burnt orange Antonio Gorgone wishbone chairs anchor a
convivial lounge and set an inviting vignette of their own along with an assortment of other vintage
Danish modern pieces.
On the top floor, a lush rooftop presents an oasis surrounded by panoramic views of the iconic New York
city skyline. Potted greenery adorning multiple seating zones, this space serves as the perfect perch for
the clients’ morning coffee or a nightcap as the evening winds down basked in the sunset glow.
As a whole, this home is a well considered answer to the lifestyle of the owners: it’s a decidedly citydwelling
perspective enveloped in calm and intimacy, mixing in modern convenience and classic detailing
fit to last for decades to come.
