Acerca del artículo

Norwegian Fjord Costume Scene – Indre Sogn, Tonsberg and Eckersberg Print This scenic 19th-century chromolithograph captures traditional costumes from Indre Sogn, a fjord region in western Norway known for its dramatic landscapes and enduring cultural traditions. Set against a stunning mountainous backdrop with a calm fjord and steep cliffs, the composition shows a group at the water’s edge preparing a small wooden boat. At the left, a young man stands beside the boat, dressed in a cream jacket with blue trim, embroidered waistcoat, white stockings, and a blue wool cap. His clothing suggests a blend of practicality and festivity, appropriate for travel or trade. Another man, seen from the back, is placing goods into the boat while wearing a dark blue jacket and red cap. The woman to the right wears a green bodice with red trim, a striped skirt, white apron, and a traditional headscarf. Her hands are clasped as if offering farewell or preparing to assist. This is Plate 9 from the important series Udvalgte Norske Nationaldragter, or Selected Norwegian National Costumes. Published by Chr. Tonsberg in Christiania (now Oslo), this lithograph was printed in Berlin by Winckelmann and Sonner and based on original artwork by Johan Fredrik Eckersberg. The series was created in the 1860s to document and preserve Norway’s regional costumes at a time when national romanticism was encouraging interest in rural customs and cultural identity. The scene captures both the picturesque beauty and everyday life of Norway’s fjord communities, making this print valuable for collectors of ethnographic art and Scandinavian history. Condition: Very good condition with strong colors and minimal wear. Slight foxing near the bottom and right edge, but the image area is clean and well defined. Framing tips: Use a natural oak or black wood frame with a cream or light grey mount. The mountain and water tones pair well with subtle matting and traditional framing styles, ideal for Nordic-themed interiors.
