Acerca del artículo

Norwegian Folk Costumes from Aal in Hallingdal – Tonsberg Edition, 1860s This finely detailed 19th-century chromolithograph portrays traditional costumes from the town of Aal in the Hallingdal region of Norway. A man and woman are shown walking together through a hilly Norwegian landscape, with soft mountain silhouettes and a church spire in the background. The composition combines ethnographic accuracy with the romanticized style typical of Norwegian national romanticism. The woman wears a dark wool skirt trimmed in orange, a white blouse with embroidered sleeves, and a highly decorated bodice in red and blue. Her head is crowned with an ornate bridal-style headdress. The man is dressed in a red waistcoat, short dark jacket, embroidered knee-breeches, and white wool stockings with decorative garters. His cap features the red checkered pattern distinctive to regional men’s attire. This print is plate I from the series Udvalgte Norske Nationaldragter, which translates as Selected Norwegian National Costumes. It was published by Chr. Tonsberg in Christiania (now Oslo) and printed in Berlin by Winckelmann and Sonner. The design is based on an original painting by Johan Fredrik Eckersberg, a noted Norwegian artist and key figure in the national romantic movement. The series was one of the earliest visual records of Norwegian folk dress, created to celebrate and preserve the cultural identity of rural communities during the 19th century. This artwork offers both decorative appeal and documentary value. It is a valuable piece of Norwegian heritage, ideal for collectors of costume prints or Scandinavian history. Condition: Good condition with light age toning at the edges and minor foxing near the right margin. Colors are bright and well-preserved with strong printing quality. Framing tips: Use a black or natural wood frame with an off-white or soft grey mount to enhance the vibrant colors. A gold fillet may add warmth and draw attention to the central costumes. Suitable for traditional or Nordic interiors.
