Norwegian Hunter and Woman in Gudbrandsdal Dress – Tonsberg Edition, c.1860

Acerca del artículo

Norwegian Folk Costumes from Gudbrandsdal – Tonsberg Edition, 1860s Description: This expressive 19th-century chromolithograph depicts two figures in traditional regional dress from Gudbrandsdal, a prominent valley in central Norway known for its strong cultural traditions and distinctive folk costumes. Set in a mountainous forest landscape, the scene shows a man leaning on his musket while gesturing in conversation with a woman who stands across from him near a carved wooden wayside marker. The man is dressed in a long white wool tunic decorated with green trim, tan breeches, and high black boots. A red cap and powder horn complete his hunting attire. A rifle rests upright in front of him, and his posture suggests he is either telling a story or giving directions. The woman wears a layered green skirt, dark shawl, and blue jacket with a patterned scarf at the collar. Her hair is neatly tied and she stands with arms folded, listening attentively. This print is Plate 11 from the series Udvalgte Norske Nationaldragter, or Selected Norwegian National Costumes. Published by Chr. Tonsberg in Christiania (now Oslo), the print was lithographed by Winckelmann and Sonner in Berlin and based on artwork by Johan Fredrik Eckersberg. Produced in the 1860s, the series was intended to celebrate Norway’s cultural heritage through careful illustration of rural costume and scenery during a time of rising national identity. The detail in this print not only highlights the garments of Gudbrandsdal but also conveys the relationship between people, land, and tradition. It is an exceptional piece for collectors of ethnographic art and Norwegian history. Condition: Very good condition with vibrant colors and clean image area. Minor age toning in the margins and faint foxing at the lower edge, otherwise well preserved. Framing tips: Frame in natural or dark-stained wood. Use a neutral cream or warm white mount to bring out the earthy tones of the clothing and setting. Suitable for rustic or traditional Nordic decor.
