This is a stunning laminated giclée on aluminium composite panel screen printed with glitter. The work hand signed and numbered by Damien Hirst on the label on the back. Nūr Jahān is a limited edition of 3.041 copies, which includes 1.480 physical works and 1.561 NFT.
Damien Hirst series "Empresses" is an homage to 5 amazing women with a major relevance in history. Little known for western culture, their greatness is celebrated by Hirst.
Nūr Jahān was the most powerful woman in 17th Century India, a woman who took the leadership at a time and place where females were not taken under any consideration. An expert hunter, a wise ruler, a great architectural designer and a delicate poet, those were the main characteristics of Mihr un-Nisa, which was her birth name, who later became Nūr Jahān, a name that means "The light of the world".
Nūr Jahān didn't come from loyalty and after widowing she became part of Mughal Emperor Jahandir's harem. Soon she became the Emperor's favourite wife and begun to take relevance in political decisions. As the dynasty's only woman ruler, Nūr Jahān is omnipresent in the folklore of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Nūr Jahān, a talented architecture, designed a tomb for her parents in Agra that was so innovative that inspired the design of the Taj Mahal, in fact, her parent's mausoleum is actually known as "the little Taj Mahal".
In this work, Damien Hirst pays special attention to this architectural side of Nūr Jahān and her Agra tomb design. With a kaleidoscope-like patterns the view is draws to the center, inspired by the mosaic tile ceiling of the interior of the mentioned mausoleum.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Damien Hirst is a British contemporary artist born on June 7, 1965, in Bristol, England. He is best known for his controversial works, which often explore themes of death, mortality, and the human condition. Hirst rose to fame in the 1990s as one of the leaders of the Young British Artists (YBAs) movement, a group of artists who gained international recognition for their avant-garde and often shocking works.
Hirst grew up in Leeds, North Yorkshire, and moved to London in 1984 to study Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. It was there that he first gained attention for his work, particularly his installations, which often included live animals in formaldehyde-filled tanks. His earliest notable work was "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" (1991), a tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde and displayed in a glass tank.
Hirst's art is often characterized by its use of unexpected materials, such as live animals, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. Damien Hirst
L'artiste britannique Damien Hirst est largement considéré comme l'enfant terrible de l'art contemporain. Il est le plus connu des " Young British Artists", ou YBA, un groupe composé en grande partie de camarades de classe de Hirst à Goldsmiths, à Londres, qui ont commencé à exposer ensemble dans des entrepôts et des usines après 1988. Appartenant à la série de peintures "ponctuelles" , commencée par Hirst dans les années 1980, la pièce de 2005 Xylene Cyanol Dye Solution frappe par son uniformité industrielle semblable à une machine et par sa simplicité presque enfantine, qui semble s'opposer à l'idée de l'artiste-génie.
En plus de faire de l'art, Hirst a lancé des magasins qui vendent des œuvres éditées (Other Criteria), un restaurant (Pharmacy2) et même son propre musée londonien (Newport Street Gallery).
