The limited edition Heads by Javier Calleja presents a unique piece in which the artist plays with the structure of a tower formed by five heads, stacked vertically. Each head features a simple yet expressive design, characteristic of Calleja’s style, which includes exaggerated features and large, bright eyes, creating a sense of innocence and vulnerability. Though the heads are not connected to bodies, they convey deep emotional impact through their expressions and shapes, establishing an immediate connection with the viewer.
What stands out in this work is the interaction between the heads. While they appear disconnected, their vertical arrangement suggests a visual narrative that invites reflection on the relationship between the different emotions each face may represent. The repetition of the heads, with slight variations in their expressions, can also be interpreted as a reflection on identity, the multiplicity of the self, and the various facets of the human psyche.
The use of space and verticality in the piece reinforces the idea of stacking, which could symbolize the accumulation of thoughts and feelings, or represent the way in which an individual or society builds identity through layers of experiences and memories. ABOUT THE ARTIST
This Spanish artist, born in Malaga in 1971, has a long career on his back. Almost 30 years creating that settled him as the sought after artist he is today in 2017.
After many exhibitions in his native country, Europe or US, showing his works in museums galleries and art fairs around the globe, the greater success came from Aisho Nanzuka Gallery in Hong Kong in 2017. “Hi” was how he entitled this solo exhibition and a presentation that was really well received by the Asian public. So well received that Calleja sold every artwork presented there and even got a waiting list of collectors to purchase his future work. A year after, the story repeats itself and the same huge success happens in Tokyo also with Aisho Nanzuka. And that was just the beginning.
Even he is easily tagged by many who say Calleja’s figures are inspired in anime or kawaii, that’s something that is not. Calleja claims his Mediterranean roots, the ones that got him painting as a kid inspired by Spanish cartoon artist Francisco Ibañez.
His art is based in portraits of disproportionated figures of big eyes and always using bright colors with minimal but solid strokes. Acid sentences are also a must that twist the images’ naive intention and definitely gives a second thought.
Even though his early works were created in a smaller scale, his current works are developed in large canvases and a few meters tall sculptures. Following his curiosity about different medias and techniques, Javier Calleja proves he is a tough working multidisciplinary artist. His studio, located where he was born, is much bigger today and has the best staff to help the artist fulfill this huge new projects.
Javier Calleja just can’t stop now. His schedule is filled with new projects, editions, exhibitions and collaborations. No wonder he will give us, at least, another 30 years of career.

Javier Calleja s'est fait connaître du monde de l'art grâce à ses œuvres figuratives immédiatement reconnaissables, qui mettent souvent en scène des personnages trapus aux yeux écarquillés et aux proportions exagérées. La pratique de l'artiste espagnol englobe la peinture, la sculpture et les œuvres sur papier, ainsi qu'un ensemble d'œuvres éditées et de produits dérivés. Calleja a exposé dans des galeries à Madrid, Barcelone, New York, Paris et Hong Kong, entre autres grandes villes. Un certain nombre de collections publiques dans toute l'Espagne ont acquis ses œuvres. En mars 2021, le record de Calleja sur le marché secondaire a dépassé le million de dollars américains pour la première fois, lorsque sa peinture de 2019 Waiting for a While a été vendue pour 8,8 millions de dollars HK (1,1 million de dollars américains). Bien qu'il s'inspire de son expérience personnelle et de ses souvenirs d'enfance pour créer ses personnages emblématiques, Icone préfère ne pas expliquer son travail, laissant plutôt l'observateur "terminer" l'œuvre avec ses propres interprétations.
