This beautifully hand-colored lithograph, published circa 1865 by German geographer and educator Traugott Bromme, showcases a diverse range of mollusks and related marine life. The plate comes from Bromme’s highly regarded educational atlas *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, a comprehensive 19th-century work aimed at bringing natural history to a broad audience.
At the center of the image is a highly detailed depiction of an octopus (8), with extended tentacles and intricate suction cup patterning. Around it are several other cephalopods, including a squid (9), cuttlefish (10), and smaller molluscan forms. The plate also includes slugs (11) and snails (12, 21), drawn with careful attention to their textures and coiling.
A rich array of seashells is displayed across the lower portion of the print, featuring conch shells (19), cowries (17), limpets (25), and various spiral, turreted, and bivalve shells (13–16, 22). These are presented in both natural and cutaway forms, allowing a glimpse into their internal structure. A few more obscure or primitive marine invertebrates—like a chiton (1), a nudibranch (18), and a feathered worm (4)—round out the plate.
Each figure is precisely labeled and arranged with symmetry and clarity. Bromme’s lithographs were celebrated for their combination of scientific rigor and visual elegance, making them valuable both as teaching tools and decorative objects.
