Courtyard Oasis
From the moment visitors step through the carved wooden door of this residence, they are transported to another world that feels far removed from the city. Designed in collaboration with architect Charles Travis, the house is an artful blend of Spanish and Mediterranean influences, combined with modern, clean-lined elements. The entrance opens into a paseo, where a Moroccan lantern casts soft light, and the floor's herringbone brickwork sets a rustic tone. Beyond the second doorway, the courtyard unfolds, with its warm red roof tiles, pea gravel, and lush foliage, accompanied by the soothing sound of water.
The central courtyard acts as the heart of the home, surrounded by glass-and-steel windows that soften their contemporary lines with greenish putty-colored frames. This mix of old-world charm and modern minimalism creates an interesting dynamic. The home's interiors continue this balance, featuring a carefully curated collection of Spanish, Mexican, and global antiques, including Belgian doors and an Indonesian ceiling panel. These pieces, though diverse, share a textured, tactile quality that unifies the space.
At the same time, modern custom designs are woven in, like leather-clad ottomans and a sleek steel bookcase in the dining room. Restraint is key, with light fabrics and spaced-out decor to prevent the space from feeling heavy. Dark and light contrasts, especially in the lighting fixtures, add drama and visual interest throughout. In the guesthouse, or casita, the design takes on a simpler, more rustic aesthetic, with finer contrasts and a softer color palette. Ultimately, the home feels like a journey, continually revealing new surprises and transporting visitors to a place of beauty and discovery.
