As a designer, I consider this 1980s chessboard a perfect example of how design can transform a functional object into a work of art. In line with Rena Dumas' style for Hermes, the project is based on a minimalist and elegant approach, where each element has been carefully considered to blend form and function in a harmonious way.
The chessboard itself is made of high-quality materials. The lacquered wood used for the base has a glossy finish that recalls the purity of the architectural surfaces typical of those years, almost reflecting the idea of order and precision. The game grid is built with a perfect balance between geometry and proportion, where the gold and steel colored squares are not only visual contrasts, but create a visual rhythm that invites interaction with the game.
The metal pawns represent the focal point of the design. Each piece is designed with an aesthetic reduced to the essential: clean, geometric shapes, which distill the nature of each piece to its essence. The queen and king, for example, are majestic in their simplicity, where the crown and cross are not decorative details, but stylised symbols that communicate power with a decisive line.
