A really stunning bronze sculpture of a lancer on a horse. The sculpture dates from 1973 but we believe that it was later engraved with a date from 1992 and some other details so as to celebrate a specific event. Karl Reidel originally made a full size version of the lancer and its placed in his hometown of Landshut in Germany outside the old armory and we believe he also made this smaller version or possible maquette. The later engraving was added to celebrate the thirty year anniversary of the twinning of Landshut (Bavaria) and Compiègne (Alsace).
Reidel's work from the 1960s to his death in 2006 had a wonderful mid-century look and feel and he was a highly accomplished sculptor. We are of the opinion that Reidel's market will continue to grow over the coming years. Condition wise the piece is pretty much the same as it left the foundry, bronze is a super durable material so hard to damage.
What I like most about this piece is the minimalism of the Lancers head and face which has a great mid-century feel and also the plumpness and roundness of the horse. The silhouette from this piece is great and it is likely an object that one will find oneself looking at again and again as it has a real magnetism and presence.
