This beautifully hand-colored zoological lithograph dates to around 1865 and is attributed to German geographer and publisher Traugott Bromme. It was likely issued as part of his widely circulated work Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit. The print features a rich and lively array of small mammals, primarily rodents and lagomorphs, meticulously illustrated in natural settings.
Among the animals depicted and numbered are several types of squirrels including the red squirrel (1), black squirrel (3), and flying squirrel (13), as well as common rodents such as the guinea pig (24), dormouse (16), lemming (6), hamster (8), vole (15), rat (17), and field mouse (14). Larger species include the North American beaver (18), capybara (5), porcupine (21), and marmot (7). There is also a chinchilla (25), a muskrat (9), and a woodchuck or groundhog (22). Two species of hares are shown: the European brown hare (20) and the mountain or snowshoe hare (23), along with the rabbit (19).
