Informazioni sull’articolo

"The Polo Player" Pierre Bosco, (1909-1993) Oil n canvas Signed lower right 15 x 12 inches Pierre Bosco showed an interest in art at an early age. His commitment and dedication to painting eventually took him to Genoa and later Rome where he became a restorer of religious paintings, learning the techniques of the Great Masters. His early works showed a natural sensitivity to color and a willingness to give volume to images, which will later develop into his artistic signature. When he first discovered paintings of Cézanne, Pissarro, Gauguin and Rouault, he was convinced that his future is in Paris. At twenty-two Bosco left Italy and moved to Saint-Germain-en-Laye outside of Paris, assiduously attending classes and painting workshops. There he meets the artists Pierre Bonnard, André Derain, Aristide Maillol, Edouard Vuillard and his brother-in-law, the Nabi painter Ker-Xavier Roussel, who becomes his great spiritual master and with whom he will discover his own artistic personality. The war years were difficult for the artist regardless, he managed to have his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1943 at the Galerie Roussel. After his father’s passing, Bosco returned to Paris in 1946 and continued painting and making a living as an art restorer. In the 1950s he finally began to realize greater success and recognition. In 1953 Bosco participated in an Exhibition at the Paris Museum of Modern Art where his painting Descent from the Cross received high praise. The following year he exhibited fifty paintings at the Galerie du Hérisson to an enthralled public. The French press associated the paintings of this period to “bewitching magic,” and according to the poet Guy Lavaud, “Bosco is a powerful painter and a visionary.” For three consecutive years the painter was selected for the prestigious prize at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. At forty-five years old, in 1956, Bosco signed a contract for fifteen years with the prestigious Galerie de l'Elysée in Paris for exclusive representation. At this point in his career, Pierre Bosco had reached a maturity that was appreciated by art connoisseurs as well as the press which was unanimous in praising his "dazzling visions;" Le Figaro considered him "as one of the greatest painters of his generation;" and the New York Herald viewed him as "the latest Picasso in perspective, and very much in vogue" (May 14, 1957). Bosco became well known to the affluent and societal elite of the French capital appearing in still more laudatory articles written by numerous famous poets including Jean Cocteau and Marcel Sauvage - who dedicated a poem to him. By now Bosco now has achieved his place among the biggest names in contemporary painting: Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Matisse; his paintings enter permanent collections of museums. Once introduced to American art aficionados, Bosco attracted financiers, lawyers, actors, film producers, etc. In 1959 the art collector Marquis de Langle organized an exhibition in Paris which was a gathering of European royalty, writers, diplomats, high-ranking officers, celebrities of stage and screen who acquired his paintings. Bosco married Madeleine Poire in 1960 then traveled to New York for a honeymoon and the opening of a major exhibition of Bosco’s work. The New York Herald Tribune praises the event and thanks to this success, they extend their honeymoon in the United States. The Athénée Museum in Geneva dedicated a major exhibition to him in 1961 with notable collectors including the American industrialist Joseph H. Hirschhorn who made several acquisitions. In 1964 he exhibited at the Max Bodner gallery in New York; his paintings are presented among those of Marie Laurencin, Picasso, Signac, Pissarro, Renoir and Rouault. In April 1967 Bosco was awarded the Silver Medal of the City of Paris and in June he was made Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture. Pierre Bosco occupies a privileged place among American and European collectors, particularly in France and Italy, but also in Scandinavian countries. Numerous Hollywood celebrities such as Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Jack Palance, as well as former French President Georges Pompidou, were all collectors of Bosco paintings. Pierre Bosco occupies a privileged place among American and European collectors, particularly in France and Italy, but also in Scandinavian countries counted Bosco. His works are also found in the collections of Museum of the City of Paris; Tel Aviv; Caramulo (Portugal), Beaverbrook Art Gallery (NB, Canada);Toledo Museum of Art; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC.
